On March 16th, President Obama signed a new Executive Order which expands upon a prior order issued in 1950 for Disaster Preparedness, and gives the office of the President complete control over all the resources in the United States in times of war or emergency.

Indeed. "Emergency" or "Disaster" be it natural, man-made or imagined.

Why should presidents be able to make laws simply by decree? Does this smack of the natural right of kings? Or dictators?

Executive orders are the primary way by which the president does his job. He's supposed to issue executive orders and run the federal government. That's what he is paid to do.

The Emancipation Proclamation was an Executive Order. The desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces was an Executive Order.

Obviously our president is not "voting present" on these issues. He's criticized if he does nothing and criticized if he does. Dealing with partisan second guessing comes with the territory.

That's kinda funny, I just finished watching preppers last night.

So you are telling me that all these families being featured on tv and all the local families that have stockpiled food and guns....or even animals or gardens for the day when the "sh** really hits the fan" actaully may find that their local leaders simply come and take their stockpiles for redistribution in the community or simply for the use of the community leaders and their families. They think they "own" these preparation items. The one's on TV are now well known, addresses, etc.

Kinda funny, I guess you really only own things and have freedom if everything else in society is OK. Rights of ownership and freedom to do things are contingent on a lot of things going just right, that's too bad, that's not the country I was sold as a kid.

I see no reason that this ruling could not be limited to medium and larger production and distrubution companies vs. individuals doing what the govt already suggested they do to prepare for a disaster. If the govt wants to store collective food for disasters, it should do it itself....but wait, if the govt gets everyone else to store food and then gets the right to control it when there is a disaster, this is actually a reductions in govt, if they store it and they control it when we need it they they are big govt....if we store it and then they control it when we need it, then we have less govt. So perhaps Obama is the pres of smaller govt ;)

Wanna bet they cancel preppers as preppers realize they need to be much more secretive about where they keep their stores and don't want to talk.

Its too bad they do not provide an executive summary of laws like this describing what is changing and the reasoning for the law revision. This is not a new law, like many others, but why is it changing?

It does seem to give unlimited power over resources to the Feds.

If you want to be, press one. If you want not to be, press 2

I do have to laugh when I see those prepper shows. The first rule of prepping is don't tell anyone! Much less show your stores & location on a national TV cable broadcast.

Lets hope no POTUS ever has to use this executive order, but there must be a reason why they thought it necessary to write it.
