LOL. No more spare tires, in order to save weight and improve gas mileage.

Don't worry though, it is mandated that all new cars have electronic tire pressure sensors to tell you you're tire is flat. LOL And mandated rear video cam and electronic stability control. But no spare. Your Gubment DOT and DOE dollars hard at work making yer life better! :)

Nearly half of new vehicles don’t include a spare tire.

And before you can buy the car, you will have to pass the "fat-ass" test.

Don't think I would buy a car without a spare. My new truck only has room for a doughnut and I am not happy about that either. I don't want to be driving 10 miles on a bad dirt road on a fake tire.

Here's an article from June 2011 on cars being sold without spares:

I think I've had one complete flat in the last 10 years. I have had a number of slow leaks (nails), which allowed me to fill the tire up enough to get to a repair place.

To clarify, the government didn't tell the manufacturers that they had to remove spare tires, the industry itself decided to do that in response to mandates to improve fuel efficiency. And really? Removing a spare tire saves that much weight? Give me a break, that's just stupid!

The electronic tire pressure sensor I have is okay, but messes up too - it's far easier to look at the tires myself and gauge by eye whether they need filling or not. Maybe removing the sensor equipment and wiring would save some weight?? :faint:

From the article:

“It’s an industry standard practice so it’s not on the dealer to let the customer know because his car isn’t even offered with a spare tire,” said Rickenbaugh Volvo General Manager Nick Pacifico.

“Most of it has to do with taking weight off of the vehicle to improve fuel economy standards,” said Pacifico.

Spare tires are being left by the side of the road as the federal government pushes car makers to make models more fuel efficient.

Don't worry...Obama is "providing" ObamaCarCare.....you will be required to pay for AAA or other type of roadside assistance program or the IRS will tax you $ 500 per year.

You're right SC, its the mfrs. choice to eliminate the spare tire, I was just having fun with it. I still don't like the other mandated equipment though.

These pump up sealer kits could be a safety problem though, if people don't get the tire replaced. Same for the idiots that drive around on the temporary doughnuts forever. LOL

Another unrelated change is the elimination of ash trays, that's why people fly into DIA, rent a newer car and then drive up to the mountains and flick the butts out the window. Nothing funny there.

I think people were flicking butts out the window long before ashtrays disappeared, though it certainly doesn't help. They lazy @$$e$ would rather litter than have to clean out their own car.

I've had plenty of flat flats. Have stood there and listened to the hiss as the tire went flat. It happens when there are gravel roads and glass. However, I never ever plan to buy a new car again anyway (unless they perfect fuel cell technology and offer it at a reasonable price--yep, never ever). Actually, I like the old clunkers that you can pop the hood on and see right through to the ground below :sunshine:

I carry a spare tire, fix-a-flat and a plug into the lighter air compresser. I think the car manufacturers have found a good way to make spare tires non-standard and blame someone else for their cheeeeeeepness and greed. As for mandated sensors, they're crap and the gov't needs to get out of people's lives. JMO.
