Dr. Jill Stein Clinches Green Party Presidential Nomination

The Green Party's Jill Stein has clinched her party’s presidential nomination after celebrating a major victory in yesterday’s California primary, winning 49% of the vote against her chief contenders, television comedienne Roseanne Barr and public servant Kent Mesplay. The California win followed other recent Stein victories in Michigan, Florida, and Iowa.

With 182 delegates required to win the nomination, and 194 delegates now in hand, Stein will go into the Green Party convention in Baltimore, July 12-15, with a clear majority of delegates. She has won over 66% of all delegates allocated, and 27 of 29 Green Party primaries, with the next nearest candidate, Roseanne Barr, at 22%.

We are currently petitioning in: Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Indiana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia

We plan to petition in: Every single state except for Georgia, Oklahoma, and North Carolina, the three states with the most anti-democratic, obstructive ballot rules. Getting on the ballot in these states requires the expenditure of as much as $100,000 apiece. If you'd like to help make that happen let us know.

It’s tough being a third-party candidate; they don’t get much respect from the political establishment. In the political establishment’s defense, that’s probably because third-party ideas tend to be a bit radical. Stein’s answers for providing 25 million new jobs include substantially downsizing the military, taxing financial transactions on Wall Street, and legalizing and taxing marijuana.

But she has bigger problems to tackle first: Stein, who lives in Lexington, Mass., is only on the ballot in about half the states in the country. And after the arduous task of getting on all of them, she’s got to vet a running mate.

Though one potential candidate sparked interest when ABC News, noting similarities between the two, brought up his name: Buddy Roemer, the quixotic former governor of Louisiana who couldn’t break through in the GOP nomination, but whose liberty-loving and anti-Big Money views overlap broadly with the Green Party.

“That’s a really interesting thought,” Stein said. “Many people have suggested that we pair up with a libertarian.”

On the way back from Ohio, we were listening to the Fran Tarkenton radio show and he had Jesse Ventura on (who was promoting his new book). Jesse said at one point, "If you're voting Republican or voting Democrat, you're voting for the problem, not the solution." We have a history in this country that includes independent parties rising to power from time to time, when the need arises - it's time for that to happen again, IMHO. This lady is smart, and has a good plan - please research her and consider voting outside the box this fall. Nothing's changed in the last 70 years with the 2 parties that have bounced back and forth in power, let's mix it up!
