GOP: "Legitimate" rape will not cause pregnancy

That is wrong on so many levels. First, what is a "legitimate" rape? As opposed to "Illegitimate" rape. That is as bad as the Republicans earlier attempt to redefine "forcible" rape. No means no.

Second, what science is there that "the female body" will shut "that whole thing down"? Really? This principle is apparently only known to male white conserative Republicans.

Unfair to declare that this is the belief of all Republicans.

Apparently, at least Akin and Ryan...Since they both cosponsored the "Fetal Personhood" bill which would have denied abortions with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Thanks GOP for the-gift-that-keeps-on-giving, Paul Ryan....and Todd Akin...and Mitt-the-Twit RMoney

Todd Akin, Josh Mandel, Bachmann, Joe Walsh, Louie Gohmert, ad nauseum... You have to wonder how many loose-canons the GOP thinks they can tolerate and still survive as a party... Oh, wait... They aren't REAL "Republicans"...They're teabaggers... Using the words "crazy" and "teabagger" in the same sentence would be redundant.

So the bill didn't actually deny abortions it simply removed federal funding?

I agree. This was not the stating of the stance of the entire GOP, just one deranged idiot.

One problem is that this idiot co-sponsored abortion legislation with Paul Ryan, who personally believes that no abortion in cases of rape. This brings abortion up as an issue for the Presidential race and revives the "War on women" meme. GOP will lose more women with this one, but it will help them with the far right fringe and social conservatives, but they already had them.

RMoney has had to distance himself from Ryan's postions on a few issues now, one has to wonder, why in the hell did he pick the guy as a running mate? Even his campaign team were against the pick.

In your little echo chamber, you may think 90% of women support abortion rights, but it is closer to only 60%. About the current percentage of women who vote Dem. So don't get overconfident there.

Ok, so maybe 40% of women won't condemn him for his views on abortion, but how can you be sure they won't vote against him and other GOP candidates because those candidates are so incredibly ignorant?

Scientific American Blog post: The downside of politicians talking about science
By Ilana Yurkiewicz | August 20, 2012

There are certain subjects in science that have made it into the public spotlight as hot-button political issues. Overall, politicians talking more about science is a good thing. But in politics, a particular type of discourse dominates. The world of politics is inherently antagonistic, where one candidate needs to beat another, and the language follows suit. To make their positions easier to digest and remember, politicians tend to dichotomize issues: one candidate adopts the pro-something position, while the other is anti. It’s a world where nuance is at best not appreciated and at worst frowned upon, and where changing your mind in the face of new evidence is criticized as a sign of weakness.

But the problem is that as scientific subjects join those ranks, the antagonistic nature of political discourse has infiltrated elsewhere. Into classrooms. Into labs. Into our everyday discussions with one another. That mentality just doesn’t work in science.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

Already getting the e-mails from Dem fundraisers about "legitimate rape". So will the man resign?

Another really scary thought is Akin was appointed to the House Science and Technology committee by Speaker Boehner.
