GOP: "Legitimate" rape will not cause pregnancy

Akin is toast, and is too stupid, and proud, to lay down and die.

Just as in the private sector, one mistake can, and in many instances should, end an otherwise promising career in the public sector if the mistake is large enough.

He can "clarify" all he wants. Legitimate, forceable, those aren't the words that people are upset about. It's the idea that a woman can't get pregnant from rape because the woman's body rejects the sperm.

Which is a distortion of what the man actually said. What he said was that women becoming pregnant from rape was rare. He may be an idiot as to why it is rare, but he is correct in stating that it is rare.

That is a ridiculous statement. Reported pregnancies from rape occur 5 - 10% of the time, about 31,000 per year. The actual number is probably higher, since many victims of incest and/or statutory rape do not report such pregnancies as rape. (unless you are one of those who consider those victims as not having been "legitimately" raped"). That number would no doubt be even higher if emergency contraceptives were not prescribed (not available to those unfortunate victims taken to a Catholic hospital). Unfortunately many of the conservative Neanderthals believe that pregnancy from rape only occurs once in millions and millions of rapes.

This may seem rare to some, but to those unfortunate victims, it is real.

Romney/Ryan must be really concerned as Akin's views are closely aligned with Ryan on this subject.

Oh, I hope not. I hope he refuses to listen to the Party and hangs tough. The GOP has made their bed, and I hope they lie in it... I hope all of the troglodytes and knuckle-draggers come to his defense and hang tough. I want the rest of America to see the kind of people that the right-wing extremists want to put in office.

Surprise, surprise surprise

you really need something new to hate LJ, your material is getting stale.

It doesn't matter if he is conservative or liberal, I submit that, in reality, left/right has no meaning here.
(and let's face it this sort of crap is in no way limited to the GOP, the left is loaded with
card carrying idiots of it's own)

This guy is an idiot and and completely out of touch with reality.
he has been blinded, like so many, by his primitive biases.

He needs to go. period. no left or right about it

Really?

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

If you are defending this idiot, then your credibility on this message board is nothing. Between your smugness and self-righteousness and your positions, you are quickly becoming the poster boy of BS on 285. At least VL is trying to make a joke of it all, but you take yourself seriously and you are in an extreme minority on that. It's not even worth discussing anything with you anymore.

Mike Huckabee Would Like to Remind You That Rape Has Created Some Extraordinary People

Why is everybody so down on rape? This is what Mike Huckabee wanted to know today, on his radio program, which also featured Rep. Todd "Legitimate Rape" Akin as a guest. For instance, did you know that Ethel Waters was conceived when her mother got raped? Do you know what a world without rape would look like? A world without Ethel Waters, that's what.

This is not new information. He rendered himself the poster boy of B.S. a long time ago. But if you ever want to know what the "sovereign citizen"/"Constitution Party"-type revisionist-history viewpoint is, he's your man.
