The military is funded and paid by the federal government. They are bought and paid for by the taxpayers of the US. They are government employees. Without the government, there would be no military.

If the military are not employees of the government, then who employs them? Last I heard, the Department of Defense was a government agency, and those who work for the DoD are employees of that agency.

Hmmmm...Commander in Chief.....sounds to me like the buck stops on the President's desk. Doesn't that make him the boss, even if responsibilities are delegated to others?

Well I disagree, you can have a military without having a government

but it isn't what any thinking person considers govt work.
Sorry but this thinking person considers anyone drawing a government paycheck to be working for the government. Do you think that military people make their own decisions about when & where to deploy?
Is a government employee subject to the UCMJ? Do they sign a binding 8 year contract?

I will agree, that DOD is a Department of the Government. SS we are not bought and paid by the taxpayers. We like many others are paid by taxpayers money. I know that most in the military we do not consider ourselves government employees. The rules and laws that government employees follow are a lot different than what the military follows. We have our own legal system, our own confinement system etc. Completely seperate of the rest. So maybe it is has a lot to do with terminology

OK Soul, I looked up government employee, it only talks about civilians. It does not talk about those serving in the Armed Forces. So I will agree to disagree.
