U.S. House Prepares to Vote on Visas for Foreign STEM Graduates
by Jeffrey Mervis on 18 September 2012

Democrats and Republicans alike believe that foreign-born students earning advanced science and engineering degrees from U.S. universities should be able to remain in the country after graduation and apply their talents to help the economy. The issue is championed by university presidents, state and local officials, and corporate leaders. Both presidential candidates have also come out in favor of the idea, which is sometimes simplified to "stapling a green card to their diplomas."

But reforming U.S. immigration laws is never that simple. And this week politics is once again expected to trump responsible policymaking. ...observers say the long-awaited legislation, introduced today and put on an extremely fast track for a vote, is likely to be defeated. If that happens, its demise will have more to do with election-year appeals by each party to its political base than to any fundamental disagreement in Congress over the need to improve the management of legal immigration.

<shakes head> This is so ridiculous, this waste of time and efficiency for posturing and pandering. We need more independents in office...

Negative campaign ads to blame? "My challenger voted to allow foreigners to take high paying jobs from Americans by letting foreign students get work visas."

Why don't more American students pursue PhD's in science and engineering? I have an idea, but it's been so long since college I don't know what is going on nowdays.

Most American kids don't like taking advanced science and math? When I was grudgingly taking these courses 20 years ago most of my classmates were male foreigners.

That's the common excuse. I was thinking more about why most stop at Bachelors or Masters degrees and go to work. There was no sense of recruitment whatsoever at my college to go on for a PhD. One of my professors offered to refer me to a local company he worked with, for employment. But none tried to encourage anyone to go on to a phD program that I remember. I don't know if that is still true today or not.

After a few years of the ACA being in full effect, politicians from both sides will find quick ways to keep foriegn doctors in this country since we won't have enough of our own willing to go so far into debt with smaller and smaller incomes and higher and higher tuitions.

And yes, this is my opinion based on my conversations with 5 of my 6 doctors and known facts.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

The Economist has described this situation in Britain for years. There is too much hassle and not enough money in being a doctor anymore to encourage American kids to pay the high tuition and do the extra work, so foreign kids go to both US schools and foreign universities to become doctors.

But knowing how the modern Dem party believes unionized goverment workers should be paid more than those in private industry, I don't think this will happen. But if you treat goverment doctors like union teachers, will the good ones not be rewarded and the incompetent ones have their jobs protected by their union stewards. Maybe VL can tell one of his stories of being a shop steward who kept incompetents on the line flying commercial passenger aircraft.

More scare tactics by those opposed to having all American citizens have access to healthcare.....Really?

The number of physicians in Canada is at an all-time high and rising, according to new data, suggesting the much-discussed doctor shortage may be improving.

Fred, you make it sound like the only reason someone would go into medicine is money, while I'm sure that is one factor, I believe that the job security, doing what you love, and helping people factors into the decision. AND.....under ACA, doctors are not government employees, as much as you seem to want to make them so.

Canada is not the US first of all. And if you think there will be more people wanting to be doctors when the cost of education keeps climbing and the pay keeps falling, I think you need to take a look at some facts http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/29/healt ... neral&_r=0 I know it's a conservative source, but just give it a read if you have time.

There's a doctor shortage in this country, and it's bound to get worse. The new health care law expands coverage. There'll be more patients waiting to see fewer and fewer doctors. The Association of American Medical Collages projects that by 2015, in just three years, we'll be 63,000 doctors short of the number we need. And that number could double by 2025.

Currently, there's a glut of PhDs - not enough jobs for over-qualified people. Thanks to tightening funding whole labs have been closing and the job market sucks. Plus, it doesn't pay well if you stay in academia.

The point I was trying to make Fred pretty much summed up perfectly - this legislation is universally supported by both parties, universities and scientific organizations, yet due to politicians feeling the need to pander to their uneducated constituents only to get re-elected (b/c those kind of dumb ads would be run and people would buy 'em hook, line, & sinker), we as a country lose. We lose valuable talent that we've trained and could get new technology and cures from. It's just ridiculous.
