Romney campaign event changed to disaster relief

As Hurricane Sandy blew toward the East Coast hundreds of miles away, the mammoth storm disrupted travel Monday in Ohio and the hotly contested presidential race in the pivotal state, while officials warned of possible flooding, damaging winds and an early snowfall.

The National Weather Service expected "numerous trees and utility lines" to be knocked down when the storm's winds arrived; forecasters projected gusts of up to 65 mph near Lake Erie. A high wind warning in effect through Tuesday afternoon advised that power and travel would be affected, and that some areas could face widespread outages.

Ohioans were urged to monitor storm developments, especially residents living around Lake Erie and in other low-lying areas. There were flood warnings and watches for eastern and northeastern Ohio and high wind warnings for most of the state. Forecasters expected storms with 30-40 mph winds in much of the state starting Monday evening and lasting into Tuesday afternoon.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney canceled a planned rally Tuesday in Lima, and his campaign stop in Kettering has been changed to a disaster relief event. Attendees were encouraged to bring disaster relief supplies for donation. Romney may make some brief remarks there.

In my opinion it's an appropriate response from a leader in our national communinty to a natural disaster, put the election campaign aside and ask everyone across the political spectrum to contribute and assist those who are in need now and will be in need once the storm passes.

Why you find it funny is disturbing to me, I guess you would rather that only liberals come to the aid of those in need of assistance now and after the storm. I'm not surprised at your robotic response but I am concerned that you don't seem to have any compassion for your fellow citizens.

It will be interesting to see how the current administration responds and what the effected populations of the urban centers along the eastern seaboard have to say about FEMA and Barry when the storm has passed.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Both Obama and Mitt posted Red Cross contact info on their websites. But LJ thinks it is only to take political advantage.

Just a slight correction, Fred. It's "presidential" for Obama to post the Red Cross contact info but it's "taking political advantage" for Romney to do it. Thought that should be cleared up.

When you have posted something insulting, I see no problem with everyone piling on you. You asked for it, you deserve it. You don't like it, stay out of the water.

I commend both the President and Romney for shifting gears this way.
