Just curious about the significance of why the President and Vice President lay their hands on a Bible to take their oath of office?

George Washington began the tradition of taking the oath on The Bible. As much as I love the book, I personally believe the oath should the sworn on The Constitution.

Trivia: Franklin Delano Roosevelt used a family Bible, written in Dutch. That way he didn't have to read the commandment about adultry.

1. Yes, Eleanor and Franklin were related...she was Teddy Roosevelt's niece. Franklin was her 5th cousin.
2. Eleanor birthed six children, one of which died in infancy. I believe all were over 9 lbs at birth! Had that happened to me, I'd have an aversion to sex, too!

Still haven't heard an answer on why they swear an oath of allegiance with their hand on a Bible. Why such importance in a Bible?
