Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy

Kinda interesting depending on your age.

Say hi to Lucy.

Lucy is part of Generation Y, the generation born between the late 1970s and the mid 1990s. She's also part of a yuppie culture that makes up a large portion of Gen Y.

I have a term for yuppies in the Gen Y age group -- I call them Gen Y Protagonists & Special Yuppies, or GYPSYs. A GYPSY is a unique brand of yuppie, one who thinks they are the main character of a very special story.

So Lucy's enjoying her GYPSY life, and she's very pleased to be Lucy. Only issue is this one thing:

Lucy's kind of unhappy.

To get to the bottom of why, we need to define what makes someone happy or unhappy in the first place. It comes down to a simple formula:

It's pretty straightforward -- when the reality of someone's life is better than they had expected, they're happy. When reality turns out to be worse than the expectations, they're unhappy.

To provide some context, let's start by bringing Lucy's parents into the discussion:

It is,of course, SPOT ON, the frustration is allowing the "Gypsies" to grow into middle age and
DISCOVER this for themselves....."YOU are not special, you are just another spoke in the wheel
that goes round and round......from my POV, the parent that enables this mindset well BEYOND
legal adulthood is part of the problem.....ultimately the disservice to the child is long term and
difficult to reconcile .....JMO

What a bunch of hooey....generation y'ers are no more alike than baby boomers, or any other generation. Trying to fit them into some neat little box is no more than an academic exercise doomed to fail.

Well of course, there are all different types in generation Y, but people like to generalize, comes naturally.
I do think that kids raised after the 70's are more likely to think they are someone special and deserving. When you are an only child, or one of two, you get a lot more attention, and in broken homes, often kids are spoiled by parents trying to win them over. And then you have the whole expectation that they are all supposed to go to college. And I don't even want to get into Disney and women role models, every girl is a princess.
So when they were told this growing up and are now working minimum wage or dead end jobs, if they can find work, it is a little dispiriting.

Guess MY exposure to this age group is A-typical then.......because the scenario painted is EXACTLY what my friends young adult children display....a disproportionate sense of entitlement
and from I have read in the WSJ it is an ONGOING problem within the business environment... :coffee-News:

My wife's company even had management classes in how to work with Generation Y members.

You mean like fitting the tea party into the stupid, ignorant, racist, anti-American terrorist box? I agree.

:sarcasm: Bob you clearly don't understand what happens to a child when bad things are allowed to happen to them that damage their self esteem, it haunts them in to adulthood and ruins their lives. Mom and Dad won't buy you the latest cell phone, they keep nagging you to get a job and move out of the house, meanwhile you're getting your welfare check every month so why bother? It's obvious that the world is out to get you and the rest of your generation so take everything you can get while you can get it (and the Gubment will take care of you for the rest of your life because there is an endless supply of wealth that will be redistributed form those who have to those who don't). Only suckers actually work for a living, the smart people enjoy the bounty that the Gubment provides!

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Corruptissima re publica plurimae leges; When the Republic is at its most corrupt the laws are most numerous. - Publius Cornelius Tacitus

Why isn't that relevant archer? It happens here on a daily basis by LJ and it's the same exact thing. And there's the "conservatives are/do/say... " thing. I'd love to post examples if you disagree with my alleged hypocrisy.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
