Sounds like a coverup to me. My guess is that the USDA pressured NASA. Wouldn't want us to know that Martians can survive on a dying planet by eating junk food.

I stumbled on "Some of the Best from Tor.com:1012 Ediiton..." It is free from Kindle. I have not started it but think it is more recent popular SF authors. I stumbled on it looking for works by Gene Wolfe. I am not familiar with him but saw some favorable comments on some SF site.
