The way to stop discrimination based on race, or gender, or any other characteristic, is to stop discriminating in all instances. We can never have a color blind society so long as some in the society insist on making sure that the society isn't color blind.
The job of the Supreme Court is to uphold the Constitution, not attempt to cure any perceived ill in the society by becoming legislators themselves. States and institutions of those States may, if they choose, continue to practice affirmative racism if they wish, but the 6-2 ruling of the court today leaves no doubt that there is no requirement for them to do so, particularly when the people, from whom all power to govern is derived, speak clearly and plainly that they wish their institutions to be colorblind ones.
I actually think affirmative action in college admission is a good thing. Too often minorities are stuck in poor public schools and need a little extra help to get into good colleges. But it was interesting to see such a landslide in this case. (Kagen recused herself.)
