If it were me, I might still be hoping that they wouldn't kill me if I complied with their demands. It's obvious he didn't mean what he said, so it's a hollow victory on the part of his captors to make him read that kind of statement.
What sorrow for his family. I wish that we as a species were past this kind of brutality toward each other, it's so senseless and damaging.
"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
The only way to deal with groups like ISIS is to destroy them. Unfortunately, we have become far to weak in this country to persue total victory in anything we do, and I doubt the current administration has either the integrity or the leadership to effectively address this issue.

Kurdish women warriors. Read a story yesterday that the Kurds are arming women to fight against ISIS. Seems the terrorists think they can't get into paradise if they are killed by a woman. The women have to be better shots than the men, right?
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.

Unless you develop some way to implant some electronics in all of humankind's brains and control their every thought and move, humans will always be tempted to kill humans. There is no amount of preaching, socialization, government, laws, rules, suggestions or punishments that will change that.
But our current administration is keeping the heat on IS (they want to be called IS, short for Islamic State, not ISIL or ISIS). The Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into the murder. Kid you not.
