President Obama on Thursday authorized the Pentagon to call up reserve and National Guard troops if they are needed to assist in the U.S. response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Obama signed an executive order that allows the government to call up more forces and for longer periods of time than currently authorized. There is no actual call-up at this point.
Help me out here. So, even though we are not actually fighting a war in Iraq, or in Syria, are drawing down troops in Afghanistan, and have no troops protecting the Southern border, we don't have enough troops to assist in the U.S. response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa without using the National Guard?
What would we do if we actually had a war to fight?
What am I missing here?

Don't know. I would guess these are NBC warfare specialists.
More to the point, this is yet one more case where Barry and his administration have tripped themselves up by trying to satisfy the special interest groups and suppress panic amongst the sheep. First we need to get our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan regardless of the stability of those two countries when troops leave, then we are told by the CDC that Ebola is no threat to the US, then we have the first three cases of people infected in the US since the 1970's (can you spell Hemorrhagic fever?). So now the solution is to tap into the Guard and Reserve to deliver a "SWAT like response to Ebola"? Please, this is just more exploitation of the liberal press to convey a false message.
Guard and Reserve troops have a lot of talent but they generally don't have current tools and technology available to them. Their are specialists in the Guard and Reserve but they have jobs in the commercial world too, losing employees to recalls to active duty isn't helping the economy or the private sector. The majority of the Guard and Reserve are NOT medical specialists; you can't kill Ebola with bullets and bombs.
Time to impeach Barry and hold the rest of the administration accountable for the long list of misdeeds they have committed since 2008!
I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Ours is not to wonder why? Team Obama really only has a couple of tools they use, either throw money at it or send in the military. Will more troops die in Liberia or Iraq?

The Pentagon said the order allows flexibility to draw on the reserve force for specialists in areas of technical engineering, communication systems, logistics, comptroller duties and religious specialties.
The reservists provide special skills not available among active-duty forces and can augment or replace personnel sent to Africa, the Pentagon said.
