Minneapolis and other cities are looking at making major changes to their police forces. Maybe a London style alternative where police are disarmed and non-lethal alternatives are also not used. Or maybe replacing police with more social workers instead of criminology grads?

Would you be more or less likely to visit downtown Denver if you knew the police department had been disbanded?

Fred,
There may be no reason to visit downtown Denver. The Symphony has cancelled its season. All other venues at the DCPA are expected to follow suit. The Denver Convention Center has nothing scheduled through at least the late fall. Currently it is still be held as a "hospital", probably due to the fact that the City of Denver contracted with the Convention Center to create the hospital.
Many restaurants will not be re-opening. Would you go to the Capitol Grill to get a steak wrapped in saran wrap and served by someone in a mask and gloves? Still praying the $60 entree plus sides price. I think not.
Lots of unintended consequences, vagrants will have few people to panhandle, crime will rise, robberies, house break-ins, car theft, etc. They need to have money to pay for drugs and alcohol.

Add to this the shackling of the police. Look at what happened in Baltimore after the riots revolving around the Freddie Gray incident. Murders spiked along with all other forms of physical violence. That city still has not recovered.

I think there is still an overwhelming majority of citizens who are smart enough to understand the consequences of defunding and ultimately neutering law enforcement, especially in this environment where cops are the targets of enraged animals. As I said in another thread, NYC is doomed to devolve into a criminal nightmare.

I am curious to know if there is anyone on this site who thinks this is a good idea at this time. I suppose if you live out in the sticks and don't have a business that is exposed to people who would like to destroy it, this probably isn't a worry for you. This is the first time I'm glad I don't have my Denver business anymore... I'd probably be living there with my "little friends".

Great point. Denver doesn't have much right now to inspire you to go downtown. And knowing the police just got denied many ways to control unruly mobs would give me even more reason to stay home.
I know a Denver police officer who is on riot detail this week. His wife is really worried that he will get injured or killed since so many protestors are so inflamed right now.

I have an old friend who lives near Aspen Park who was a beat cop and now a detective. He’s happy he doesn’t wear a uniform anymore but fears for his buddies that do. They shouldn’t have to be afraid to go to work every day when they are good people doing a job most of us wouldn’t be able to handle.

I believe it is an EXCELLENT time to REWORK(not defund)....the method we SELECT the candidates.
WORDS are cheap. ACTION is what is now required.....the masses of people are demanding action and
a meaningful change....THAT change is in recruitment and PAY.

Defunding the police is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard and it frustrates me to no end that it was a former Obama official/blue check Twitter activist moron who tweeted those 3 idiotic words and gave the partisan right something to latch onto and try to claim that liberals want this.

This is what's wrong with our country. We amplify the ridiculous instead of having intelligent conversations on how to rationally solve our problems.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

Well, it sure isn't conservatives who want this. Its coming fromthe socialist wing of the democrat party...

As far as having a conversation t solve problems, don't we first have to define the problem?

Trump should be easy to defeat this fall, people know who he is now, before they were just guessing. But then the Democrats always have to verge into crazy land. Sure, police accidentally kill people. But of a nation of 350 million people, the numbers are small. But the radicals like AOC are screaming to shut down the police forces in liberal cities.
Luckily for the Democrats, candidate Biden rejects this hashtag. He knows a strong police force is needed in urban areas. For the past two weeks, the police have held back and let their cities burn and be looted. People were seeing every night what no police means.
