The fires are not being caused by activists and Antifa, and the fact that 1/10 of Oregon's residents (over 500,000 people) have had to evacuate is because we are seeing unprecedented fires burning across the United States. 3 million acres in California, 3 of their 5 largest fires are burning right now (all 5 of the largest having occurred in the past 5 years). In Colorado, our entire state is in a drought for the first time in 7 years and we just had the largest and 4th largest fires in state history in the past month. All of this is exactly what climate scientists warned would happen and is well-documented in scientific journals and historical records. Climate change is exacerbating poor forest management policies for the past 90 years, and we're seeing the results year after year now with increasingly devastating environmental disasters.

Misinformation about the source of the wildfires raging across the Pacific north-west is spreading rapidly on social media, prompting public officials to plead with the public to stop sharing rumors.

Many of the rumors claim without evidence that the fires were lit by political activists, either by the far-right group the Proud Boys or the leftist activists known as antifa.

“We are inundated with questions about things that are FAKE stories,” the sheriff’s office in Jackson county, Oregon, wrote on Facebook Thursday afternoon. “Rumors make the job of protecting the community more difficult,” the office added.

“Rumors spread just like wildfire and now our 9-1-1 dispatchers and professional staff are being overrun with requests for information and inquiries on an UNTRUE rumor that 6 Antifa members have been arrested for setting fires in DOUGLAS COUNTY, OREGON,” the Douglas county sheriff’s office posted on Facebook on Thursday.

The Ashland police chief told the Oregonian : “One thing I can say is that the rumor it was set by Antifa is 100% false information.

One of the fires may have been set, and it's unclear as to who or why (the Alameda Fire - see quote above from the Ashland Police Chief in the Oregonian). Others are known to have been started by lightning strikes.
