Promote What You Love Rather Than Bashing What You Hate

Injustice, poverty, slavery, ignorance - these may be cured by reform or revolution. But men do not live only by fighting evils. They live by positive goals, individual and collective, a vast variety of them, seldom predictable, at times incompatible. ~Isaiah Berlin

Promote What You Love Rather Than Bashing What You Hate
October 9, 2014

I was shocked at her question, but I knew what I wanted to teach her. My response had nothing to do with her being gay or straight, it wasn’t political or religious. It is however the answer to some of the biggest problems we create for ourselves. So I said, “I’m not going to tell you what to believe or how to feel, but I do believe our world would be a better place if we started promoting what we love rather than bashing what we hate.”

We had a great conversation about what that meant and how that is truly a principle of influence and persuasion and she left with a positive approach.

There is no better example of this than in American Politics.

If you want to stand out, be heard, be relevant, attract people to you, create change or be an influence for good – then Promote What You Love rather Than Bashing What you Hate.

The gauntlet is thrown down, care to rise to the challenge?

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

As Venezuela was converting to a socialist hell hole, I wonder if the population was just complying with the insanity and looking at the bright side of their lives or were they scared shitless about what was happening to their once prosperous country? I like the sentiment and I would normally agree that it would be better for one's state of mind and happiness to promote what you love and set aside what you hate. But for me, these are times of very fast fundamental change being orchestrated by very unimpressive people who only care about keeping power.

There's a lot of us who still promote the greatness of this country and we love it so much that we can't stay quite while we watch it being destroyed in every way possible. How can I ignore the reality of what's happening to it without swallowing the 'blue pill' and going off to some utopian dream land where I can pretend that our president isn't literally losing his mind.

You obviously don't see our country crashing at a record pace SC and I envy you for that. I envy the fact that you and others can go through life trusting the government to preserve this great experiment for your kids and their kids. Sometimes I wish I hadn't taken the 'red pill' that made me skeptical of our leader's intentions, but I also know that this country needs people to push back if we are going to have a chance to turn this all around.

All that said, I have more than enough to bring me happiness in my daily life. After saving a large sum of money I quit my job and I've been remodeling my mid-century modern house so we can move to the mountains of Montana or Wyoming within the next year. My kids are all successful and I see them a lot and will soon have a grandchild. I have a lot of friends that we love to hang out with and I'm very healthy. All in all I have a great life and hopefully I've got a good 20 years left before I'm converted to dust.

I've told you before why I come here SC, and it's not to talk about all the beautiful things around us, it's to vent about the people who are threatening those beautiful things. To me, the most beautiful things about this country are the freedoms, liberty, and prosperity we've been blessed with.

So I'm sorry if the reason I'm here disappoints you, but I need a place make my case and vent my frustrations since doing it in the real world with friends and family who think differently would damage my happiness. If this was The Fun House and not The Courthouse, I would have never posted here. This is why I decided not to meet you in person when I had the chance years ago... I knew I'd have to treat you like my other liberal friends, which means I could no longer talk politics here.

It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers−out of unorthodoxy

This right here is why I have seriously cut back on participating in the CH. I can't tell you how tiring it is to have the same damn absurd assumptions brought up over and over and over again.

You obviously don't see our country crashing at a record pace SC and I envy you for that. I envy the fact that you and others can go through life trusting the government to preserve this great experiment for your kids and their kids.

You have no idea how I feel about our country. Maybe if you'd paid attention to what I've been writing the past 10 years you would, but you don't listen, you keep putting your biases and assumptions on me and every other liberal here. You ASSUME what sources we read, even when we state them otherwise. You ASSUME what those sources have written about, even when you've been proven blatantly wrong. You ASSUME that we all fit in one neat box 100% agreeing with what the Democratic representatives do, say, and propose for legislation.

It gets to the point where it's not worth having the same conversation over again, wasting time posting other points of view or proving facts otherwise as stated.

This right here disappoints me more than you know. I'm so glad that I and all the members here, unlike your friends and family, can simply be who you dump your shit on rather than real human beings who have complex beliefs, differing ideologies, and yet the same core values that make our country great. Our Founding Fathers had widely held beliefs yet they compromised to forge a new path forward, and these days far too many hold the opposing side as not just wrong and unworthy of listening to or understanding, but as evil and treasonous. That's the true downfall of our nation, and I'm so glad to see it alive and well here on this board. :sarcasm:

The point of this post is that if you want to convince people that your ideology is more sound, a better way forward, then you don't do it by constantly and only bashing the opposing ideology. People aren't motivated by hate long-term, they need hope, goals, and a realistic path forward; hence, my quote at the very beginning of this topic. Politicians of both sides do this and it simply widens the divide and kicks the can down the road of solving our complex problems.

As Jim Wright says, "If you want a better country, be better citizens."

I don't just run this business and post in the CH, I volunteer in the community with the Chamber and Rotary WIldfire Ready. I listen in on BOCC meetings and share developments that impact everyone. In January I will become part of the Jeffco Wildfire Commission to work on creating policies that will (hopefully) reduce our wildfire danger because it's a critical issue. I volunteer with a local fire department. I've endlessly encouraged everyone to get involved and engaged because the way to make things better is to put in your own time and effort, however best you can, not by sitting around complaining about everything that's going wrong. If that's all you want to do, don't expect to get much response or respect from me any further.

If you don't like what happens in the Courthouse, you need to change the description to something else or just close it completely.

Discussion and debate about politics, current events and science. Can get heated but must remain civil; no personal attacks. All opinions are those of the members and not reflective of My Mountain Town. RATING: PG-13

Bad politics are killing our country and I have no intention of silently watching it burn. I've made a strong effort to be civil and to not make personal attacks so if there are new rules here, please list them now. If I'm civil and am just speaking my mind, then I'm not sure why you're so upset. You've ignored 90% of what I've posted and I always assume it's because you either don't have time or don't have a good enough counter argument... either way, that's fine with me. 90% of what has happened in the last 9 months has been indefensible imo and I'm just trying to figure out if there are people out there that are ok with it or if they know what's happening is wrong but just don't want to admit it's a preventable nightmare.

I think everybody that posts here are following YOUR rules, now it's up to you either to change them or start deleting people you don't agree with.

I give up. I didn't say there were new rules, I was trying to make a point that constantly bashing the "other side" doesn't promote your cause at all, and that applies to both sides. By all means, continue dumping on liberals, or conservatives, but that's what I see as the reason why there's fewer responses because no one wants to engage in fighting constant assumptions that don't apply to them, or strawman arguments. All the people who really want to argue and be mean and nasty have moved on to FB and NextDoor, heaven forbid the owner should try to make this place be better quality discussions.

Politics are not for everyone SC. Some people live their whole lives without knowing what the government is doing and that's probably a pretty happy place to be. Unfortunately for me and many others, we actually pay attention and see what's happening. Some of us understand math and know what happens when you spend more than you can afford. Some of us are fearful for the future of our children and don't want them to experience the pain of an economic collapse and a future of mandates and authoritarian rule. Trust me, if I didn't have kids, I'd take the damn blue pill and climb back into the matrix so I wouldn't care what was really happening.

Since I've been posting on this board I've never seen political discussions that were feel good debates that led to people of opposite ideologies becoming good friends. There is no moderate middle when one side decides to not enforce laws and to flip off the Constitution in order to fundamentally change the country to their utopian dream. One side made "mostly peaceful protests" that included destroying cities acceptable, but only for their side. There's no middle ground that could counter that madness, so now we all must play by the rules set by that precedent. You either get into the debate or you close your eyes and ears and go on with your life. I'm sorry, I can't do that.

If you can show me any political forum on the net where R's, D's and I's talk nice to each other I'd love to see that, I just think that's another fantasy.

NO ONE IS TALKING ''NICE'' TO EACH OTHER....that is the central problem, civility is non existent. THAT was the point SC was making....it doe not have to be this way...but there is ONE person that condoned it,
encouraged it and made it a trend. Now, the fubar is at it's finest.

The point I was trying to make is this: if you think Republicans will do a better job, and have better ideas to fix a problem, then share that. Convince me their solutions are a better path forward, with data and rational arguments, rather than constantly telling me liberals are doing it wrong. Because I can tell you right off the bat that no one side has all the right answers, and if anyone thinks that then they are missing the strengths the other side has in creating the best solution together.

And vice versa for liberals.

I've got a multi-page topic on global warming. Read through it and tell me how many posts are me bashing how one political party keeps downplaying vs straight up data showing it's a problem and possible solutions to address it.

Promote what you love rather than bashing? Guess I won't discuss the Denver Broncos! (Rimshot!)

I like that Senators Manchin and Sinema realize the DNC doesn't have a mandate and are passing a reasonable bill that hopefully won't increase inflation or the debt too much. That won't penalize the job creators with taxes on assets that hasn't been even realized yet.

LOL on the Broncos FH! They've got potential!

Agreed on Manchin and Sinema. I'm unhappy with the villainization they are getting from Democrats (especially the extreme left who are toxic) and am hopeful that moderates in either party will lead the reasonable path forward.
