Obama: ‘If They Bring a Knife to the Fight, We Bring a Gun’

Did one of you liberals ever address the topic of this thread (Obama's words)? It's hard to navigate through all the misdirection. Is it ok for the president to say this type of rhetoric or not?

It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers−out of unorthodoxy

Archer, you forgot to put In Your Opinion. Typical judgmental comments not unlike what LJ did with no facts at all.

Your question is not ridiculous, it is stupid. I don't ever agree with that lunatic. Do you? Sweetness and light!! Are you serious?

No Critical. The one thing that Liberals never do is defend stupid rhetoric. Instead they attack.

nice deflection, I don't see anything in the president's words that was treasonous......and I don't see anything in the presidents words that rise to the level of killing off the conservatives in the nation that don't agree with him, or with liberals. that seems to be the sole idea of at least one on the right.....and maybe others since none of you have said you aren't in total agreement with BearMtnHIB .

It is the gradual encroachment of government power aided by socialists and communists - that is the threat to liberty and freedom today. We're like a buch of frogs in warm water - with a fire under us called socialism - and that fire is what will cook us all, and some of us are already cooked.

Who will have the guts to answer? LJ, willing to answer a simple question?

Deflection? It's the topic of the thread is it not? Do you think Obama's rhetoric is ok, and if so, why are Palin's somehow worse?

OK, in my opinion, so you think advocating the takeover of the US government by force, killing American citizens is not treason......do you sympathize with Bin Laden too.....how is what he did any different than what BearMtnHIB wants to do to this nation? We are supposed to be a nation of laws, of the ballot box, and peaceful change of power......for those who revere the constitution, BearMtnHIB just tore it to shreds.....in MY opinion.

The president did not make that statement as president. Presidential candidate Obama made the statement in 2008, not directed to individuals, but in the context of countering false republican attacks against him, that if the republicans were going to attack him, he would return the attacks with more vigor. The line is a paraphrase from the movie "The Untouchables", and is an idiomatic way of saying that if someone attacks you, you attack him back harder.

That you have to resort to pulling a quote made almost 3 years ago out of context in an attempt to create an outrage is pretty sad.

I have no problems with the statement in the context that it was made, since it was not directed at any individual, nor was it made in the context of physical violence.

So CriticalBill, I note that you have failed to condemn BearMtHIB in his support for murder and violence against those who do not follow his particular political point of view? I must take it that you agree with him, that assassination is now the American way?

Shoot, I'll answer the original question. It was clearly a metaphor, and a rather commonly used one at that. Taken in light of Saturday's events it looks bad, but at the time it was a non-starter. I doubt that even Fox made much of it at the time.
