Jeffco boy facing felony charges in airsoft gun mishap

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- A 13-year-old Jefferson County boy says he knows what he did was wrong, but says it was an accident and he never intended to hurt anyone when he shot his toy airsoft gun at a friend, who was hit in the eye.

His parents say their son deserves to be punished, but believe juvenile felony assault charges go too far.

Edited by me to add:

When will this nonsense stop? Kids do stuff. Things happen. When did it become illegal to be a kid?
Why would anyone wish to declare a 13-year old boy, a Felon? He'll live with it for the remainder of his life; maybe another 50 to 60 years!

Based upon the information provided I think this is ridiculous.

However, we don't know the whole story.

Perhaps there is a history of this sort of behaviour?

This kind of thing was always handled by the parents when I was growing up. I think its ridiculous for a DA and the courts to be addressing it at the taxpayers expense. Another infringement in my opinion.

The boy should not have been playing "fast draw", and pointing the gun, yes it's a toy but it's still a gun, at another person. That being said, I'm pretty sure the boy learned his lesson.

Much like that kid that started the house on fire by playing with matches outside. He will be not be charged or prosecuted as an adult. No jail time. Records will be sealed. He will learn his lesson. He will prolly not even see the inside of a jevenile detention center. Now all this crud about banning these air rifles is a big joke IMO. But kids should be taught to never point a gun, any gun, at another person

I guess playing cops and robbers or cowboys and indians will end up in court for now on. This is just stupid, just like the DA and the cops who pursued this case. A giant waste of resources.

Does this mean that my kids and I can not get padded up, wear safety glasses and play search and destroy with each other?

When will paint ball gun fights become a crime as well?

The kid has no prior history of behaviorial problems. The airsoft gun is not a weapon any more than a paper wad is a weapon. Accidents happen.

The authorities in Jefferson County are totally wrong on this one.

If convicted of this charge the kid would not be able to ever own a firearm in his life because he is charged with a felony. Child or no, this will follow him for the rest of his life.
