Recommended Reading: Saul Alinsky, The American Organizer

A Resource for Every Organizer & Anyone Contemplating Action in Their Community

NEA recommends the following Saul Alinsky books to those members of our Association who are involved in grassroots organizing, especially Association Representatives (ARs) — also known as building reps or shop stewards — and leaders at local affiliates.

Saul Alinsky is widely recognized as the father of, and pre-imminent expert in, grassroots organizing, which is why we recommend that ARs and local leaders become familiar with his theories & materials.

Alinsky’s writings have been called the “mother’s milk of the left,” however in an ironic homage, the conservative right has borrowed a page or two from the Alinsky playbook. Tea Party leader and self-described “conservative radical” Michael Patrick Leahy, for example, has authored a book based on Alinsky’s teachings: “Rules for Conservative Radicals.”

No, actually been off doing things with our days.

How can you not support decent teachers? Or should we just say to hell with the future? remember, these are the folks who will decide things about YOUR life in the next 20 - 30 years - don't you want them well educated?

This is about having decent teachers, but it is about teaching teachers to teach Saul Alinsky's Philosophy, which is IMO a form of brainwashing or indoctrination that I am not for.

Was this from Fox News? Deflect again. You tried to get us to feel sorry because your sister is a teacher in Wis.

Now what do you have to say about the NEA and their recommending Saul Alinsky's writings?

I never tried to gain or asked for any sympathy for my sister. But if you feel so inclined, please go ahead, but also include her husband, 2 of my nieces, as well my wife, all of whom are teachers. Growing up I had many role models that were teachers. I would bet most did.

I have no problem with the NEA recommending books for their members to read. The article said nothing about recomending their members TEACH any of the authors philosophies (like you assume it to mean). Remember that public school teachers have a curiculum set out for them.

You seem to have glossed over or completely missed the point that Tea Party leaders like Michael Patrick Leahy, John O’Hara and Dick Armey for example, also use and reference Alinsky’s teachings. So the tea Party wants to brainwash us too??

According to Tea Party organizer, John O’Hara of the “Heartland Institute, "Alinksy’s book is important because “There really is no equivalent book for conservatives. There’s no ‘Rules for Counter-Radicals.” Dick Armey’s “Freedom Works” group uses Alinsky’s book as a primer for their training of Tea Party members. Adam Brandon, press secretary at “Freedom Works,” says “he was given a copy of “Rules for Radicals” when he took his current job.” Tea Party members were instructed to use Alinksy’s “rules” at town hall meetings. A memo, written by Bob MacGuffie of conservative group “Right Principals," told those attending town hall meetings to “Use the Alinsky playbook of which the left is so fond.” He quoted one of Alinksy’s rules: “Freeze it, attack it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

It’s all so confusing Nmysys. Here you are demonizing Alinsky while your Tea Party leaders seem to be embracing his ideas. Perhaps you didn’t know this. But if you do, the terms double standard and hypocrisy come to mind.

You can hear the surprise in MY voice.

Apparently we have leaders and funding by the Koch Bros. as well from what you and others have so freely informed us. Seeing as how I was one of those instrumental in forming the 285 Corridor Tea Party Group, which BTW is an Independent Group of your neighbors, I wish you would tell us how to obtain the funding and the education that we are supposedly armed with.

No, my friend, unfortunately we, the Local Chapter of this so called National Party are the last to know this. If it is true that the Tea Party has said to read it, might it not be to understand the tactics of our opponents and condemners? Of course we can see what the tactics are.

We have no intention of Brain Washing anyone, as you would see if you would attend one of our monthly meetings. What we try hard to do only, is to inform and get people involved in the whole process. By getting involved in the political process, we believe people will make better decisions about who they elect.

Nmysys, when one sets out on a path to do something important as I believe you are endeavoring to do, you would do yourself a great service to surround yourself with like-minded people

Instead of holding onto a group of friends who conjure up images of the bar scene in Star Wars.
