I've never been much for science-fiction but lots of people are. I think my problem has always been that the plots get to complicated for my feeble old mind. But my wife tells me that Robert A. Heinlein is one of the best.

I love Faulkner and Dostoevsky but more obscure writers i love are Harry Crews, Stanley Elkin and Gunther Grass. -all fiction
Anything by Edward O Wilson I also will read. Yeah and Christopher Hitchens..

Tolkien, by far. One of the most committed and thorough fantasy writers.
I also like McCaffrey and her Dragon riders of Pern series.
