May 31, 2011 - Central Eastern Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - JEFFERSON COUNTY – Work is underway to resurface U.S. 285 through Turkey Creek Canyon, between State Highway 8 (Morrison exit) and the Parmalee Gulch Interchange (Indian Hills).

Project hours are as follows – Monday through Thursday:

--Southbound – 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
--Northbound – 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Only one lane will be open to traffic on southbound OR northbound U.S. 285 during work hours so some slowing should be expected along with possible traffic delays of up to five minutes. A reduced 40 mph speed limit also will be in effect so motorists are reminded to please Slow for the Cone Zone, stay alert and pay attention to and obey all work zone/advisory signs and flaggers.

The estimated completion date for the project is Thursday, June 26.

“New asphalt will provide the traveling public with a smoother road surface that’ll last at least ten years,” says Colorado Department of Transportation Project Engineer Anthony Anderson. “Safety also will be enhanced by the new striping, since it’ll improve visibility along the highway, especially at night.”

CDOT is rotomilling and asphalt paving the roadway as part of a road improvement project that began in the canyon last fall. It included rock mitigation, concrete median barrier construction, new guardrails, and shoulder improvements.

Brannan Sand and Gravel Co. of Denver, CO. is the prime contractor.

FASTER – Funding Advancements for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery – funded $700,000 of the $1.7 million project. FASTER is funded by vehicle registration fees, with the Safety Fund used for construction, reconstruction, or maintenance projects that the Transportation Commission, a county or municipality have determined are necessary to enhance safety on a state highway, county road, or city street. ***Alert on 6-10-11****

Due to a disabled vehicle in the work zone, crews have been unable to pick up the scheduled lane closure on westbound US 285 between Knox Court and Sheridan Boulevard. As a result, motorists may experience major delays throughout this evening's rush hour and alternate routes are strongly advised.

... yet no sign of cones being taken up, southbound, at 5pm today!!!

(is this the same contractor who had to be issued a 'stop work' order because of constant late ending last August????)

Leave a love letter for CDOT at their website ('Contact Us' in the Quick Links). I also sent Brannan a love letter. They've gotta do better than that!

Came thru there SB at 1pm and it was already bad with 1-lane, the milling was way ahead of the paving! Can't imagine what it was like at 5pm. Wake me up when the constructin is finished!

They haven't started paving, just milling so far.

And, I sent an email to the CDOT Public Affairs person who responded back in August when I complained.

I don't think folks are asking for much, just keep the schedule you say you are going to keep.

By the way, the "3:30 southbound lane closures" is incorrect. I spoke to one of the sub-contractors. The southbound lanes will be closed till 4. Gonna be ugly!

Too bad future generations aren't here to see all the great things we are spending their $$ on!!

I spent a good 30 minutes in that mess going up the hill yesterday- I was later than usual getting out of the city. At 5PM the backups were causing major traffic problems om 470.

Can someone post the e-mail address to complain to CDOT- what a mess!

I had to get off at co8 and go up 74 because my car was overheating- this was also a mistake as they are also paving Hwy 74 above Morrison.

I couldn't see any supervisors to give a gleeful half peace sign to- but they sure would have got one yesterday.

Today I'm taking Deer Creek Canyon home.
