We lived on Gilpin and Evans and were in a neighborhood of student rented houses and elderly longtime residents. The elderly next door were robbed by a so-called Public Service CO employee that came in to inspect the furnace. He grabbed her wedding ring off the sink, they had been married 60 years. Our house was burglarized, just money and a leather coat, we walked in on them and they went out the back door. The students next door (all girls) were plagued with peeping Toms. I was called a few times to come over and check the yard. The neighborhoods look lovely in the daylight, but use judicious caution wherever you live. DU is very close to I 25, and some raunchy neighborhoods.
I would say if you live there it might be an issue but once again my son is only there during the day. That really is horrible Hoot Owl.
I think alot of college girls have to worry now days. I would worry way more about my daughter at any college. I hate how college age women have attention placed on them from porn and just society as sex objects. I think it contributes.
That is terrible Hoot Owl. It is such a great school and such a rough area. I'm really concerned because he is sixteen. He has very little driving experience so I will be making the drive every day. He has classes at 8am, noon, two and six. The biggest struggle I am having is should I stay in Denver every day or come home and hope for the best. Maybe I can rent a basement out and do my school work down there while he is in school and I can pick him up between classes. Or do I let him stay on campus all day. I thought about a dorm for a long time but I don't know that he is any more safe in a dorm than in the library and he certainly can't sleep in a dorm. Oh sigh, I need a drink lol .
No, it isn't terrible, it is what happens in the City. It is not a rough area in general, things happen. Especially at night. He should be fine on campus during the day. We loved the neighborhood it just got interesting at times.
There is a public library North on University, that you could utilize. It is in the Bonnie Brae neighborhood. I certainly didn't intend to alarm you. Your son fast tracked to college, guess he will fast track to society also. Have faith, and a drink wont hurt.
Used to know French, same as TPP I speak fluent drunk but no one understands me when I do! Am planning on learning Spanish someday...
On a side note, I used to work at DU. The school is really safe during the day, not as safe at night (although not terrible - use common sense, stay alert, don't walk too far alone if possible, etc, etc). I would say that we got 2-4 notices/year that there had been a mugging or attempted sexual assault on campus, which means figure at least double the unreported attempts. I have friends who live on/near campus and they complain more about the drunken loud students on weeknights/weekends than the crime, but do admit they keep the crime info in the backs of their minds at all times. Unless you're going for a science degree, it's a great place for an education! They especially have a strong Study Abroad program, great for learning other languages!
"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
Unless you are going for a science degree? Um, now not so worried about crime. Why isn't it good for a science degree? Small classes in the science department. That is a good thing. I know DU isn't known for science but thought it would be a good school to get a BS and then move on to another school for his masters.
