This big male fox showed up a few days ago. I don't recall ever seeing him. He is a BIG FOX



Woke up this morning to a new sound from one of our local red foxes. I have never heard this type of "bark" before. The one with the whitish head is a huge male fox. He has mottled feet with white spots and the tip of his tail is white like the black foxes around here. I have no idea what was going on unless it was a territorial dispute. I watched two red foxes up on the hind legs with their front paws on each other's shoulders two days ago. I am not sure if it was the same two as we have a lot of foxes around these parts. What is going on? Is this a territorial thing?

Remember, I jumped out of bed at 6:30 and grabbed the camera, so not on my best video game here. The first half of the video is through a window screen so not great clarity. I have no idea what they were looking up at.

and now today, more updates!

We have so many foxes around this year and today, I just spotted a fox den! and it is about 30 feet from our house just below the dam below our little pond. I counted five of them, but it is getting dark and not able to get many pictures YET. but there were out there tumbling around.

But here's mom and one of her kits





more pics to come. This is exciting. We saw two foxes today, one with a gopher and one with something larger (most likely a rabbit).

Looks like they might have been assessing each other before the bigger event which often includes very high jumping, each one trying to get higher than the other to grab the neck and kill it. Maybe this is the first round.

After watching several fights, I would never consider approaching a fox, no matter how docile it might appear. They can jump higher than you think.

Since you are so close to their location do you hear the youngsters barking in the night?

I'm convinced a fox is a cross between a dog and a cat.
