Don't forget to make a backup restore CD. Our Sony laptop with windows 7 came with no CDs DVDs and you have to create your own, or die! 
Speaking of older computers, I still have an old 386 laptop with 3.1 and a HP pavillion with Windows 95 that still operates. Have some CAD software on that that still works.

How about a MacBook Pro Wily? I haven't price comparisoned recently, but of course doing it your way is the most economical, and conservation-minded!
