Yes, I think so but the problem is, if I'm not mistaken (which is entirely possible), notifying the local FD is not going to be legally required until Dec 31, 2013 - for now it's just courtesy, not a requirement. If I remember correctly, one of the issues that Elk Creek Fire had with LNFF was that they weren't even notified of the prescribed burn. I have a copy of the Nov 2012 Draft of Prescribed Burning Guidelines and Procedures - Pile Burns pdf from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control. If anyone wants it, I'm happy to email it (it's 59 pages so I'm not posting that here).
Section 5.2 Part B. States:
Local Burn Permits In addition to a State of Colorado smoke permit, burn permits from local agencies may also be necessary for some projects. The applicable County Sheriff’s office and jurisdictional fire department(s) must be contacted to determine if local permits are required.
Section 5.3, PartC. States:
The Plan Preparer must consult with local fire agencies (county sheriff and jurisdictional fire department) during the planning process to ensure their awareness, concerns and coordination issues are addressed.

So how come when I burn I have to call and notify PC (yes, I have a burn permit) to let them know.
How come if I leave my campfire going and get caught I will get a ticket.
If anyone finds out the phone number to the FS office that was resposible for this burn please post it as I would like to call and complain.
Legally they may not have to call the FD until December but I can sure be a pain in there butt everytime a fire is started and I find out that they did not let the FD know.

That's stated a 2nd time in that same bill:

I was just out shoveling my deck and the wind is intense. My understanding is that they are still burning at last night's site. What the hell is wrong with these people? Yes, there's enough snow cover to halt a ground fire, but with the wind nothing can stop a crown fire. :faint:
Edited to add: I called the number jf1acai posted (thanks, by the way) and was transferred to the the Fire Boss' extension. Got voice mail, left a message to please get a return call. I'll let you know if I get it.
I got a call-back. The Fire Boss said that PCFD had been notified in the morning that they were doing the slash pile burns and when she left the burn at 8:30 last night they were notified again. I told her that that's not what came over the scanner. She said that the fires were left unattended overnight, and that due to the wind they will not be doing any new fires today. We had a lot of back and forth conversation but at the end she said that, understanding the concerns of folks up here, she will (this season only) have a person on site overnight if they do any more burns. I guess that's the best we can hope for.
I just talked to Alissa at the FS she was the actual person at the slash burn last night.
First the FS did contact PCFD to let them know a slash burn was being done.
When she left last night she also contacted PCFD told the she was leaving the scene. She was driving on 285 when the 911 call came in and immediately contacted PCFD. PCFD went and assessed the scene and determined that it was ok, she explained that she would return and remain throughout the night if PCFD thought it was necessary they told her she did not need to return.
She said that there are crews working the slash piles today stirring them and such.
There are many piles up there to burn and she assured me that they will only burn on days when conditions are right and they will always notify the fire department.

This appears to be an unattended Forest Service Slash burn.
Crews are continuing to investigate.
Interesting that the Fire Boss says she left the fire at 8:30 pm yet the call came over the scanner and was posted to DSV at 7:59 pm.
When Platte Canyon arrived a few minutes later.....there was NO ONE there at the burn site.
Generally....Platte Canyon will notify fire fighters in route that a controlled burn is taking place in the area. NO such notice was given to crews responding or on scene.
I personally believe that this situation bares a little closer scrutiny.
I will call Platte canyon tomorrow.
If they did notify Platte Canyon and that information fell through the cracks then that situation needs to be addressed.
I hope these apparent communications/operations problems can be corrected while there is snow on the ground, and before it turns in to a major problem.
Thanks to all who are working to get the situation clarified/resolved.
