Tonight I am listening to the scanner.
A structure fire report tones out.
Platte Canyon responds and when they arrive they find several slash fires burning by the Forest Service
No structure fire....just slash piles burning.
The problem.....No FS personnel are any where around. They apparently left earlier this evening.
As far as I could tell. Platte Canyon was completely unaware of the controlled burn.
WTH.
Have we not learned anything?
I am ticked off.
IMO, USFS should have made PCFPD aware of both the burn itself, and the fact that they had left the area, so PCFPD would be able to respond more quickly in the event it got too active.
This is just wrong!

Is there any way to find out when the USFS is going to do a "controlled" burn so we can at least announce it to the community and let them know to keep an eye out if they live in an area that one is being started? I, and others from the Kuehster Rd Homeowners Group, have been asking this question of our representatives since the LNFF commission ended and we keep getting unacceptable answers of "No."
I'm stunned that the USFS would walk away from a still smoldering/burning pile - private homeowners are REQUIRED to have theirs out dead cold by 4pm, or something like that if they start one, or face huge fines and penalties. The fact that government officials are not held to the same standards, and not accountable if they escape, is beyond wrong. They absolutely should be informing the local fire depts and following the same guidelines that we have to.

Is there anything that can be done to follow up on this? Which office of the FS was in charge? The news stations should be contacted with the information by someone at PCFD. This has to stop, before we have another out-of-control burn and more people die. This pisses me off!
MG,
Great idea. Could we get the FS facility that did this so we could call and complain to their supervisors? It might be good to inform Coffman or the statehouse reps too.
You would think the Forest Service should understand how dangerous their actions were.

It was soooooo frustrating to listen to this last night. I had the impression that Platte canyon was a little miffed also.....although they never said anything derogatory over the radio.
I reached out to the LNFF Kuehster Rd Homeowners and asked if they had any updates, and yes, apparently there is a public use website in the works from the USFS to announce prescribed fires.
Today is the House's first hearing on the Prescribed Burning Act, SB13-083 which we've posted about

Someone should call the FS and ask to be notified when burns occur.
Doesn't the current burn plan have a provision for a call to the local fire agency?
