Idea... Beware/Watch out List?

I posted this elsewhere, but wanted input from here more.

I was thinking on the way home tonight as I noticed some seem to be slowing down, others seem to be driving just as erratic. What if we started a thread of a watch list of sorts? I have two vehicles in mind that every time I see them throughout my commute they are dangerous - yes I've called CSP. At least if we all watch out for them, report their dangerous/aggressive driving, perhaps we can make some kind of a difference?

I know there are a lot of downsides to this idea, but dammit, I despise feeling helpless. I drive defensively, focus, and I don't text/talk while driving. I just want to do all I can to help keep my family and community safe.

Incidentally, I haven't seen any Jeffco, Parkco, or CSP in the past few days - what's up with that?

today i've seen them all over the place on 285, hwy 73, hwy 74 to i-70. must have counted 12 total. glad to see them. but that was daytime. maybe less in the evening?? have to crack up when i see a speedo slamming on his brakes when he finally spies a black and white.

don't see what the downside is to a number of people calling in problem drivers. i don't know that i would want to post it here though, not the right place imo.

Agreed, best way is to call when you see them. I just have seen zero results from calling CSP. I believe that after so many calls as an aggressive driving, they pay you a visit. I'll have to research and find out for sure.

Frustrating situation.

I know identifiable info like license plates can't be posted, but would a vehicle type, color, and general time they are usually seen be okay?

Next question: would it really help? Even if I know to watch out for a certain vehicle, there are lots of similar makes/models/colors on the road and one I come up on, or is passing me, may not end up being The One. What would I do differently if I came up on them or they came up on me anyway? Or worse, would I start paying too much attention to a vehicle that might be a problem and miss something else I should be paying attention too?

My feeling is that the best thing to do is to continue to report problem drivers to CSP - eventually it will affect them, and hopefully before another accident. Several of the accidents lately haven't seem to have been caused by problem drivers, but by people making one-time, unfortunate mistakes, like driving the wrong way.

I understand wanting to do something, anything, to improve the driving Scooby and it sounds like you driving carefully is the best way to do that! I am surprised to hear that there isn't increased patrolling right now - that seems a logical thing to do.

Replied by CC on topic Idea... Beware/Watch out List?
I know it sounds liker a good idea in theory.....I just think it sets a dangerous precedent.
I call in aggressive drivers and when it is safe...I take a picture of their tag.
I just think we would create more ill will here on 285 bound than good.
Keep trying to think of ways to slow everyone down.
I welcome the new presence on 285 and hope they stay.
How about a coffee fund to keep the warm this winter while they patrol to keep us safe. Maybe breakfast burritos from the famous burrito lady right there in Aspen Park to say thank you.
Be sure and wave to them and welcome them.

And SC...there is a HUGE presence on 285 right now.

Replied by CC on topic Idea... Beware/Watch out List?
I have to absolutely agree with Wily on this one.
30+ years ago I got a ticket and the court gave me the option to take a defensive driving course instead of paying the ticket.
That single act probably saved my life.
I learned more in that course about how to watch for danger signals around me.
Perhaps we could all get together and promote this idea through our own county court system.
Reduce the ticket (depending on the ticket) in lieu of a fine.
Make sure the classes are held in convenient locations and available to anyone who wishes to take them at a reasonable fee.
I would love to go through one again.

Call *CSP (*277) and give them the plate number, color, make & model of the speeder/tailgater and respond affirmatively when dispatcher asks if you're willing to sign a complaint.

Especially the plate number...that, above all else, is the identifier.

After a certain number of citizen complaints, CSP will send the offender a Letter of Notification,
placing them 'On Notice' that further complaints will result in a personal, face-to-face Hearing between the offender and the CSP authorities.

Are WE going to be part of the Solution, or part of the Problem?

Why not contact CSP/JCSO/PCSO and inquire about just such a 'Driver's Ed' class in response to the number of accidents along 285 recently?

The above authorities would be more than willing to initiate such, if they were to get a number of inquiries from concerned citizens. Otherwise, how are they to know that the desire for such a program exists?

Excellent 'pro-active' idea, Becky!
