PDF Layers in Obama’s Birth Certificate

We have received several e-mails today calling into question the validity of the PDF that the White House released, namely that there are embedded layers in the document. There are now several other people on the case. We looked into it and dismissed it.

The PDF is composed of multiple images. That’s correct. Using a photo editor or PDF viewer of your choice, you can extract this image data, view it, hide it, etc. But these layers, as they’re being called, aren’t layers in the traditional photo-editing sense of the word. They are, quite literally, pieces of image data that have been positioned in a PDF container. They appear as text but also contain glyphs, dots, lines, boxes, squiggles, and random garbage. They’re not combined or merged in any way. Quite simply, they look like they were created programmatically, not by a human.

What’s plausible is that somewhere along the way — from the scanning device to the PDF-creation software, both of which can perform OCR (optical character recognition) — these partial/pseudo-text images were created and saved. What’s not plausible is that the government spent all this time manufacturing Obama’s birth certificate only to commit the laughably rookie mistake of exporting the layers from Photoshop, or whatever photo editing software they are meant to have used. It’s likely that whoever scanned the birth certificate in Hawaii forgot to turn off the OCR setting on the scanner. Let’s leave it at that.

UPDATE: I’ve confirmed that scanning an image, converting it to a PDF, optimizing that PDF, and then opening it up in Illustrator, does in fact create layers similar to what is seen in the birth certificate PDF. You can try it yourself at home.

I like my theory better, but I guess this one works too. I'd like to think that Obama's crazy like a fox and baiting people in only to utterly crush them in October of next year.

I wouldn't totally discount the idea that his releasing the birth certificate wasn't a strategic move. Looked at one level, when Trump started blathering about it it may have seemed to Obama that it wasn't going to go away, so may as well release the thing. But that strategy would only work to quell the rumors if you assume the birthers are operating on a rational level.

Does anyone think that? Anyone? Let alone a guy like Obama, whom whatever else you may say about him, has extremely finely honed political instincts?

Hmmm. I'd lay fairly good odds this was planned in order to show the birthers up for what they are.

On Friday, Obama sent a letter to state Health Director Loretta Fuddy, asking for two certified copies of his original Certificate of Live Birth. On Monday, Fuddy made an exception to state policies regarding the release of birth certificates and witnessed the copying of the original certificate and attested to the authenticity of the two copies, which were certified by state registrar Alvin Onaka, Abercrombie's office said.

Original forms from the time of birth are used to produce computer-generated documents recognized as official birth certificates in the state of Hawaii.

There is a book coming out in 2 weeks that has Obama very nervous, combined with the flap caused by Trump. This is why Obama has released the BC. Obama fears this new book much more than Trump, but both combined is going to give this unqualified president quite a bit of trouble.

After the release of the long form and public certification that it is real by Hawaii officials, that book is destined for the Bargain Bin.

Don't get me wrong kresspin, I believe that this is the real thing - but what is posted at Whitehouse.gov has been altered - possibly inadvertently by software. It just seems odd that they would post something without having an expert take a look at it and confirm that there would be no questions unless it was intentional. I think Obama's a bit of a chess player.

Publisher of upcoming 'birther' book makes no apologies

The publisher of an upcoming book questioning the circumstances of President Barack Obama’s birth took credit Wednesday for fueling conspiracy theories about the president’s origins, saying he paid for an army of private detectives in Hawaii and provided information about the issue to Donald Trump.

Joseph Farah, the founder and chief executive officer of World Net Daily, a conspiracy-mongering website with its own publishing arm, also said he has no intention of standing down despite the White House’s release of the so-called long form birth certificate showing that Obama was born in the state of Hawaii on Aug. 4, 1961, as he always has said.

In fact, Farah said, Obama’s citizenship, not his birth, is actually the principal theme of World Net Daily’s upcoming book by Jerome Corsi titled, “Where’s the Birth Certificate? The Case that Barack Obama is not Eligible to be President.” Corsi first garnered headlines in 2004 as one of the architects of the so-called “Swift Boat” attacks on John Kerry’s war record.

It's by noted conspiracy wingnut Jerome Corsi. It was already an Amazon best seller, though it doesn't come out until May 17th (if ever now).
