Philip Congdon Forced Out For Racial Remarks
Congdon was quoted as saying affirmative action programs have contributed to a decline in higher education, that people of northern Maine were lacking in parenting skills and that it was time for them to "get off the reservation" if they wanted to succeed. He also said Maine's potato farmers were wasting their spuds by selling them for french fries rather than vodka.
He told the Sun Journal of Lewiston that when he spoke about affirmative action during a private meeting at a community college, "I thought I was talking to people who were sufficiently intelligent enough to understand my real meaning. I was mistaken."
Donald Trump Was Once Sued By Justice Department For Not Renting To Blacks
NEW YORK -- Donald Trump’s vehement questioning regarding President Obama's place of birth has provoked charges of racism, with a number of public figures from Whoopi Goldberg to Jesse Jackson accusing the real estate magnate of employing crude and unfair stereotypes. The chorus has grown so intense that Trump this week felt compelled to declare otherwise, telling TMZ.com: "I am the last person that such a thing should be said about."
But for Trump, allegations of racism amount to recurring themes in his larger-than-life career. Two weeks ago, when he was asked during a radio interview about whether or not he is supported by African-Americans, he sparked another firestorm when he blurted: "I have a great relationship with the blacks. I've always had a great relationship with the blacks." Trump's comments were "highly offensive," Walter Fields, former head of NAACP New Jersey, told Capital New York.
Okla. legislator slights blacks, women in debate
Republican state Rep. Sally Kern, of Oklahoma City, said Thursday she was sorry for remarks she made on the floor of the House and that she had "misspoke."
During a legislative debate late Wednesday, Kern questioned whether there were disproportionately high numbers of blacks in state prisons because "they didn't want to work hard in school." Kern also said women don't work as hard as men because they "tend to think a little bit more about their families."
The president of the Oklahoma State Conference of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People rejected Kern's apology.
"Her constituents in her district should call for her to step down unless they support her in what she said," Anthony Douglas said. "Let's send a message out that in Oklahoma we will not tolerate racism at its ugliest level."
Kern, a retired teacher, is serving her fourth two-year term in the House after being easily re-elected in November from a district that has traditionally supported socially conservative candidates.
"Women are some of the hardest workers in the world," she said in her statement Thursday. She also said her husband "is a pastor of a diverse inner-city church and the way that my words came out last night is certainly not my true spirit."
In 2008, Kern was criticized after saying at a political forum that gay people posed a greater threat to the U.S. than terrorists. In 2009, she campaigned for a proclamation criticizing the government for drifting from traditional Christian values.
