Which press release claimed credit for one’s self and which one gave all credit to others? A sign of character radiates from one, not so much from the other!

George W. Bush speech after capture of Saddam:

The success of yesterday's mission is a tribute to our men and women now serving in Iraq. The operation was based on the superb work of intelligence analysts who found the dictator's footprints in a vast country. The operation was carried out with skill and precision by a brave fighting force. Our servicemen and women and our coalition allies have faced many dangers in the hunt for members of the fallen regime, and in their effort to bring hope and freedom to the Iraqi people. Their work continues, and so do the risks. Today, on behalf of the nation, I thank the members of our Armed Forces and I congratulate 'em.

Barack Obama speech after killing of bin Laden:

And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta, the director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our war against al Qaeda, even as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat his network. Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by our intelligence community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden. It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground. I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan. And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and I authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice. Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

There is nothing here about the courage of the brave SEALs who carried out the mission; only about Obama himself.

Giving credit to an administration that was unable to complete the task seems a bit odd.

Andrew Cohen wrote that "Former [Bush administration] government lawyer John Yoo taking credit... is like Edward John Smith, the captain of the Titanic, taking credit for the results of the 1998 Academy Awards."

Jon Stewart memorably said that the Bush administration is "the Winklevoss twins of killing bin Laden,"

Twitter user OTOOLEFAN said, "Crediting George Bush for finding & killing bin Laden is like crediting Pete Best for The Beatles."

Giving Bush credit would be like:

...if birds took credit for the "Miracle on the Hudson" landing performed by Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, after his plane hit a flock that disabled its engines.

...if George Lucas took credit for Natalie Portman's Oscar-winning role in "Black Swan," after casting her as Queen Amidala in the "Star Wars" prequels.

...if King George III took credit for the United States of America after England lost the colonies.

Yes, let's talk about "class"...Like landing on a carrier in a jet and waving the "Mission Accomplished" banner.... in 2003.

It must be very hard for you guys.... Obama got Bin Laden.... Bush didn't.

Yeah, landing on an aircraft carrier, strutting around on the deck and then declaring the mission was accomplished certainly shows a lot of class.

Obama saying, I, I, I, I, don't know how to land a jet on the deck of an aircraft carrier, I, I, I, I, I, don't know how to be president, but I, I, I, I, can run this country into the ground, and make it go broke, I, I, I, can do that!

LJ, it's not about giving Bush credit for Bin Laden.

Bush was talking about another operation. One that was a success, because it resulted in the capture of Sadam Hussein. Bush's speech didn't focus on what Bush did, he turned the spotlight onto the people that actually did the work.

Obama was making sure he got part of the spotlight on the successful elimination of Bin Laden.

Bush congratulated the military.
Obama patted his own back.

It's just that simple, and there's no way to bring up a Huffington Post article or a youtube video that's going to change those two facts. Yeah, Obama did a good thing by getting Bin Laden. Then he did a bad thing when he gave that self-centered speech.

"Whatever you are, be a good one." ~ Abraham Lincoln
