Medicare is a financial black hole, and if you remove the profit from healthcare, you'll remove the incentive to improve. If we get universal coverage forced down our throats, we'll have only second rate clinics to rely on to pull it back out while we're choking.

That is making the assumption that money is the incentive. There are those that work for more than money, that work for personal reasons, to better themselves and make a better world around them.

Think for themselves? Seriously? Turning over decisions on your health to an entity with a piss-poor record like our federal government? That's not thinking, that's insanity.

My point is that even if you somehow take money out of the equation, medical research will still continue, because there are those that have passion in their life's work. They want to find a cure for diseases and will do so regardless of how much money they make.

Money is not the only driving force behind medical research, as you insinuated.

If they cure diseases, what will they make money on....

That's why you will probably never see a "cure" for cancer, AIDS, heart disease, etc... It's too profitable not to....

That being the case, how about we get the folks in Congress to pass a law that says any research funding provided by the government gives ownership of the patents of any results from that research to the government and see how many people still ask the government to fund their research.

That's a great idea. Legislation like that would bring Kate's researchers out of the woodwork to devote themselves to the betterment of mankind without any hope of personal gain. Eternal youth would be just around the corner!
