I am guessing the senate and white house never thought any agency would dare try this and they did. Does this say that congress should have listened to agencies before making their decision about what was needed or is that being held hostage?

I am going to spend the weekend trying to make sense of all of it.

CG...... Obama and Boehner and Reid thought the $4 trillion dollar number was right on....and that is what they proposed along with the "gang of six", only they couldn't get it past some house Republicans....gee, which house Republicans do you think that was? You can spend months trying to make sense of it, but it will still come down to obstructionist tea party representatives. Call them Republicans if you want, they are still at fault. If the bill that came from the bipartisan efforts of Obama, the Republicans and the Democrats had been passed we wouldn't be in this mess.....we would have looked like adults who were serious about getting our financial house in order, not hell bent on a self destruction.

I won't paint all Republicans with the Tea Party brush, many are reasonable, intelligent and responsible people who just happen to have different views than Democrats. The Tea Party is a whole different story.....and sorry CG, but if you get into office with the Tea Party's endorsement and subscribe to their ideology, then you will get painted with that brush. From the very beginning the Tea Party has done everything it can to bring down this government. ....not change it's direction, or how it does business.....bring it down. And they are doing a damn fine job of it. We are complicit in their rampage through our government because we chose not to see the destruction they are capable of. I only hope it's not too late and people wake up to realize there are real consequences to what they are doing.

Interesting that you would find the downgrading of America for the very first time so amusing. I wonder how many people will be laughing when the full effect of this hits.

It is typical of the far right thinking......we don't give a damn what happens.....we just want our way, and we will throw temper tantrums until we get it. I don't think the rest of congress is used to dealing with infants.

You are giving the tea party way to much credit. You guys are obsessed with the tea party and they are not the republican party. This has nothing to do with the tea party. And please tell me why no one has mentioned that this happened of Obama's watch? The reason that Reagan was so good was he had charisma and knew how to make a deal. Obama is way too much of an intellectual (maybe a stretch to give him that much credit, I don't consider him smart) He could not make a deal or get anyone to do anything including getting S&P to wait and think over the weekend. His ego is always writing checks that his body can't cash.

S&P are hypocrites and have their own issues so why they get to be in this position of power is beyond me.

You appear very anxious to deflect blame from the tea party. Why, exactly?

And to say it has "nothing to do with the tea party"???? The statement by S&P was explicit in that they did not approve of the refusal to put tax increases on the table. Who, if not the Tea Party, was behind that refusal?
