An interesting point was brought up by a radio jock- passage of this bill will eliminate the tax write off for charitable contributions. This will cause direct harm to charities because people will no longer contribute, not if they are going to get taxed on it.
So people only give to charity because they get a tax write off?
What? So you are ok with the Federal goverment passing dis-incentives to charitable giving when so many non-profits are in very bad shape? I realize not everybody gives only for the tax deductions, but it does help push many charitable givers into giving more or sometimes deciding to give at all.
The way you phrased your question implied you preferred people give that money to the Feds to waste instead of the charities. Who cares if even more non-profits go under, the Feds get theirs, right?

Well of course SS. lj, archer, and a few others would rather give All their money to the gov. because they want everyone to live under the thumb of power.
They might as well join a cult and expereience the same.
Wow...ask the conservatives a simple question, and they fall all over themselves attributing words and motives to the poster that just aren't there. Why are you all so defensive that rather than answer the question you go into ridicule mode?
No..I don't prefer to live under the thumb of power. No, I don't prefer that everyone give to the feds instead of charity. No...I have no interest in cults.
But all this you got from a simple question...which you couldn't bother to answer with a real answer...no, you all have to drag out the snark. You all amuse and amaze us with your replies.

Would the us, you refer to, be the Obama cultists?
I answered on page 1, but your selective reading only let you see the other posts.
People would rather give than to pay tax to the sorry ass gov. but if they can't deduct it as a gift then they will stop giving, that was easy.

I did answer your question, eliminating the tax deduction for the rich if they make charitable gifts will decrease giving and the budgets of non-profits.
Could even increase college tuitions, because many colleges supplement their budget with endowments. I read once that half the cost of a Harvard tuition is actually paid by the generous gifts of alumni. Talk about paying it forward. And the rich are doing it voluntarily instead of paying because of the threats of prison sentences or massive fines.
Wasn't Obama talking about the other day that the current generation of successful people need to give back to the institutions that helped them out. Sounds like people already do that, and Obama's new bill would discourage this.

Sometimes it's hard to find any actual posts after wading through the snark. Especially when reading on a cell. I guess I have more faith in my fellow citizens......certainly there are those who don't itemize that continue to give to churches and other charities. I don't think the deduction is the primary reason people give.
