This is carrying things just a little too far, IMO.

New York Panel Wants Taxpayers to Foot the Bill for Gender Reassignment Surgery

Published September 30, 2011

NEW YORK – A state panel advising New York Governor Andrew Cuomo wants taxpayers to foot the bill for transgender residents to get "sexual reassignment surgery," allowing them to change their physical characteristics from a man to a woman or woman to man, The New York Post reported Thursday.

"Provide Medicaid coverage for transgender surgery/hormone replacement therapy and treatment," read the proposal submitted by the state's health disparities work group.

The panel is submitting recommendations to Cuomo's Medicaid Redesign Team for possible inclusion in the governor's budget plan.

A state Health Department spokesman confirmed that requiring Medicaid to cover gender reassignment surgery is being considered.

In general - I would not support such procedures being paid for by any form of mandatory insurance.

Should a private firm elect to include it in their coverage, I suppose that'd be fine by me.

I understand that many people might want (or even feel they need) gender re-assignment.

I have a hard time not thinking of that as elective surgery - and just assume that I not be asked to pay for it.

I have a hard time understanding how/why someone would think they were born as the wrong gender but if they want to change who/what they are that's not my business... Until you ask me to pay for it. IMHO, anyone who wants to go that route is free to do so but they should pay for it on their own or find an insurance plan that covers this kind of operation and pay the premiums that come with that kind of insurance.

That being said the Brits and a few other governments have been paying for breast augmentation as a recruiting tool to get females to join their military services. I'm not against that because I don't pay taxes in those countries, if that idea surfaces in America I will be conflicted...

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

You don't pay taxes in the State of New York either... Why the sudden obsession with what New York chooses to do or not do?

Try again, I travel a lot and New York state is on my route every year. I pay plenty of taxes in a lot of states across the country in the form of lodging and sales taxes. I also get stuck paying income tax most years in Virgina, California, and Colorado.

What individual citizens choose to do with their bodies is none of my business, just don't ask tax payers to pay for individual choices that are outside medically necessary procedures.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

 That's the most convoluted justification for an outrage-of-the-day I've heard yet...

Your lodging and sales taxes wouldn't be paying for that... But enjoy your outrage...

Glad you found my answer entertaining and that you completely missed my point but that comes as no surprise. I'll return you to your special little world where unicorns prance and the Gubment's money is spent on the most wasteful and non-productive issues that the elected officials and their special interest groups can come up with.
