The same could be said about the threads that involve an argument between one poster and his opposing alter ego... My personal opinion is that its a sign of intelligence to debate either 'side' of a given topic with skill, but its absolutely pathetic to create a whole new user name and try to assume a new identity only to argue back and forth between those two names.

Same with those posters that only show up when one of their own is losing an argument and they double team a poster with insults till that poster quits the thread. It's hard to keep a civil tone when you are being berated and insulted. It's either let it continue and watch your blood pressure rise, or join in and do your best to stand your ground and give as good as you get. That's fun for about 3 minutes....then it's time to leave.

Do you really think that happens often? That's pathetic.
None of the choices are why I come to the Courthouse. I come to the Courthouse as there may be times when I can learn something about issues that are out there. If or when the discussion degenerates into something I do not want a part of, I either choose to not read anymore or I by-pass those posts from the abusers and name-callers.
I've realized that I cannot change anyone's opinion, and trying to is like banging my head against a brick wall...so I just don't.
It does turn me off when the cursing and name-calling starts...but as Otis said...I've spent enough time around the military (especially cops and aircraft maintainers) that there isn't a whole lot that actually disturbs me.

I don't know if it happens often, but it definitely occured on November 4th of this year, and I suspect in several different threads all about/around the same time.

I agree. The one-liner third grade responses and the lib vs con neener-neener turn me off to the topic and I quit reading it. I didn't vote.
I give up.....apparently you can't even agree with the other side without getting insulted or ridiculed. I tried, but I'm beginning to realize that nothing here will ever change. I am close to throwing in the towel and finding someplace where people act with civility, even when they don't like each other.
ok.....I'll sleep on it, but I do give up trying to be civil. Why bother when you are going to get insulted for that just like if you called them a name and made reference to the kind of boots their grandma wore. Some days this place sucks (apologies to Science Chic).

.
Archer, I think you would feel right at home here:
Joe wrote: As far as "calling people out", not interested. It would take too much time, too many posts. I don't even read many of them when I see the outrage topic or poster. Go for it, maybe it will help if you want to try, but I doubt it.
I think it would help.
The reason is because it appears to me that many of the most abusive posters get away with it because of hiding in a "crowd" of what they think are like-minded posters. If the only people who complain about such posts are those they see as being on the "other" side, it doesn't make an impression on that type of poster. The only thing that might would be disapproval of those they think of as their peers.
If people whose views you agree with call you out on being a jerk, it begins to sink in with even the most clueless.
I believe that the people who put the posters on here on "sides" are some of the biggest problem. They turn almost every thread into us vs. them. They do hide in the crowd after they have started the bickering, letting others do their snarking for them so as to not stain their objectivity on the subject at hand. They paint, with a broad general stroke, anyone who disagrees with them, demonizing any opposing viewpoint and using their "victory" to "prove" their "point". Just using the terms conservatives and liberals has almost become baiting at this point.
