I freely admit to characterizing "conservatives" as a whole, I think that's a game we all play.....but I don't do much of the you _________(insert someone's name here).....are a fascist, or a socialist or whatever. That's personal.

There have been several instances on this board where some have tried to find the common ground rather than dwelling on the differences.....not between conservatives and liberals, but between individuals here. Of course if we get off the subject of politics it is easy to see the common denominators......love of our mountain community, support for neighbors and the small businesses that provide the heart of our local economy......we may even agree on education, and will agree to disagree on development issues and restaurant reviews. All done with civility and often humor.
When the subject turns to politics, that all goes away. Sides have been taken, lines drawn.....you are either with me or against me. It isn't like that in real life, I worked with a die hard, far right, Texas conservative (she's supporting Ron Paul and/or Rick Perry, but is a little disenchanted with Perry right now).......yet we found more areas of agreement than we did disagreement. Even when we were totally at odds over an issue or candidate, we never got nasty, never called each other names or demeaned each other.....it never touched our friendship, working relationship, nor our ability to communicate with respect. But I'm not sure how we would fare on a message board. Once you take the actual person out of the equation, it seems that we fight not each other, but some perception we have of the other person. It just gets ugly. Like I said, I'm tired of ugly.
However, if the weather cools down here (been in the 70's for the last 10 days), and I get bored, I may tip toe back in and test the waters again. I thought about getting a new account, a new nic, a new start......but no, that is not the answer. I am who I am, no apologies, no excuses. But I sure do have the ability to turn this all off and enjoy other pursuits.
What I find curious is that off the board, I have liked each and every conservative and liberal I have met......and they have at least been civil to me even if they don't happen to like me. I find it hard to reconcile the person with their posts sometimes, maybe they do too.

Nope, I don't think anyone who knows me would call me "thinned-skinned"(sic), and I have no problem being called out on the political flavor I exude, but I do have a problem when others think they know what flavor my politics are and attack me based on those assumptions. A simple question....."is this what you believe?" or "what do you think about this issue", would go a long way towards educating themselves on what exactly they are arguing against. I have had posters insert me into an argument and claim they know what side I would be on and I haven't even posted in that thread. That is dishonest. I will ask why you find it necessary to label so many posters as "socialists" yet have not given a definition of what that means to you? Instead you answer with an example, kinda like you're answering "what does a duck look like" with "a duck".The Liberals GOP Twin wrote:

Nope... that's politics. If you don't want to be called out on the political flavor you exude, then don't post. Thinned-skinned are you?

Whodathunk it - a liberal with an illiberal mindset. You are not doing a very good job of convincing us that leftism doesn't make you meaner LJ.It has been a source of great pain to me to have met with so many among [my] opponents who had not the liberality to distinguish between political and social opposition; who transferred at once to the person, the hatred they bore to his political opinions.
