Paul Ryan on Sequestration: 'Americans Deserve Answers'

18 Jul 2012 21:53 #1 by otisptoadwater

The House of Representatives voted 414-2 Wednesday to pass the Sequestration Transparency Act, a bill requiring President Barack Obama to release to the public a plan to implement the forthcoming automatic budget cuts, including drastic cuts to the Department of Defense. Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman, released the following statement upon the bill's passage:

The Obama Administration has yet to specify how they would implement current law, while refusing to demonstrate leadership in replacing the arbitrary cuts to core priorities. Today’s legislation marks a bipartisan call for transparency and action from an Administration that appears to have given up on governing. Congress and the American people need a full and complete picture from the President’s Office of Management and Budget on how it will implement these deep reductions called for under the sequestration process.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

If it means cutting $500 billion from Defense, I'm all for it.

As much as I know there are cuts that can be made at DOD, So long as it does not hurt our ability to maintain and proper military force, does not take away from the safety of our troops and thier systems, and we are able to continue to develope new systems and or improve what we have I am all for it. For folks to just say without having much knowledge of what happens it another issue all together. I do know some on here are veterans, I know others on here are not a do not know they level of knowledge they have concerning DOD, and how it operates.

I have said before that cuts can be made, I know for a fact where some huge saving could be had. A known fact is that we are top heavy in the one star and above. Our ratio of general officers to the troops is the lowest of any country. They can reduce that. How the general officer retirement is done needs to be fixed as they make more retired than while on active duty with base pay. Start holding defense contractors to their bids. No more of "oh well there will be a couple million increase", hold them to the bid. They knew before they bid there would be price increases and it should have been figured in. Then go through the Pentagon and end the double jobbers(where 3 and 4 even more are all doing the same job that one person could do just as easily). THE TROOPS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO SHOULDER THE BURDEN OF THE LACK OF ABILITY OF OUR WORTHLESS CONGRESS TO DO A BUDGET AND GET RESPONSIBLE ABOUT SPENDING. Congress should also have to make cuts to thier spending also. Lets reduce thier staff down, curtail paying for the speakers travel to and from, no more joy rides for members of Congress, AND PULL THE HELL OUT OF AFGHANISTAN and tell Karsai to have fun, now that we have pulled out your days are numbered

414-2 vote? LOL

There will be no real work done in Washington DC until after the elections folks, so just sit back and enjoy billions of dollars in negative campaign commercials.

Not that I'm against defense cuts, but estimates are that cutting the full $500 billion would cost 1-2 million jobs from the public and private sectors. Imagine all the outsourcing to make up for the lost capabilities. Any job losses from Bain Capital were just a drop in the bucket in comparision. What's the difference in cutting jobs to help America's troubling bottom line (deficit) vs. cutting jobs to help a failing company's bottom line and save the rest of their jobs?

If there is a difference and unlike Bain, it doesn't matter, then might as well just do it now before the election. lol

Cutting 1-2 million jobs doesn't seem to be a factor for the GOP who want to cut post office workers, government employees, teachers, and even auto-industry workers... They don't have ANY solution--nor do they care--about the millions that would be unemployed if their budget cutting wet-dreams were to come true. But mention "defense", and all of a sudden they're worried about job loss? Gimme a break...

And if they do the cuts correctly, shutting down the right bases, etc, it can actually create jobs. For example, shutting down Lowry actually improved the area and created jobs.

Yes LJ, we need to pump more money into the USPS rathole that's a dinasaur compared to the private competition.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

And the Democrats don't care about people losing jobs either, of course they like to pass bills without knowing whats in them also. Your grasping at straws and can't see the sky because of all the fog your in. That is all you can do is blame the GOP, its all the GOP, they did this they did that they stopped this they stopped that. Guess whatever or whoever you can blame the easiest. '

Well time to wake up and take a hard look at your own. Democrats had the house, the senate the white house and still not a damn thing got done. pelosi did alot of talking and nothing else. Job creation is enormous, until the real numbers come out, obama did the big government thing, (lets make it bigger, we need more czars to take more rights away) then we have the whiney ass president, (well I did not get my way so I will just by pass the congress and the constitution and do an excutive order).

I know I know, I am a racist cause I do not like the president, cause that is all the demnuts can use to justify anyone against the pres. Thats ok I got big shoulders and can handle it. Funny though, that even democratic congressional folks are starting to distance themselves from him also.

that remark displays the typical ignorance of conservatives. The taxpayers do not fund the USPS. The only federal advantages that the USPS receives is not paying federal taxes and being able to borrow money at discounted rate. In return, the people of the united states get the ability to mail documents at a ridiculously low rate compared to private competition ($.50 compared to $15) with home delivery almost anywhere in the US.
