Lie of the Year 2011: 'Republicans voted to end Medicare'

12 Aug 2012 19:57 #1 by otisptoadwater

Republicans muscled a budget through the House of Representatives in April that they said would take an important step toward reducing the federal deficit. Introduced by U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the plan kept Medicare intact for people 55 or older, but dramatically changed the program for everyone else by privatizing it and providing government subsidies.

Democrats pounced. Just four days after the party-line vote, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released a Web ad that said seniors will have to pay $12,500 more for health care "because Republicans voted to end Medicare."

Rep. Steve Israel of New York, head of the DCCC, appeared on cable news shows and declared that Republicans voted to "terminate Medicare." A Web video from the Agenda Project, a liberal group, said the plan would leave the country "without Medicare" and showed a Ryan look-alike pushing an old woman in a wheelchair off a cliff. And just last month, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a fundraising appeal that said: "House Republicans’ vote to end Medicare is a shameful act of betrayal."

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Dramatically changing Medicare for everyone under age 55 is voting to end Medicare....I don't care how you try and spin it.

The GOP house bill, described as immoral by Catholic bishops, would gut Medicare to the point that it would no longer be viable. Instead of covering the elderly, it would simply provide a voucher not based on the person's needs, for the individual to go shop in the private health insurance market. The voucher, describe as $2000 per year, would only provide partial coverage as the baby boomer generation ages. Try getting a private health insurance policy at age 75 for $2000. Talk about your death panels, the Ryan plan would pretty much guarantee the death of our elderly.

The only conclusion I can come to is conservative really do not care what happens to the elderly once they are no longer of use to society.

[sarcasm]The Obamacare death panels will be far more compassionate I'm sure. "Well sure your are sick, get in line and we'll get back to you when it's your turn to experience Socialized Medicine at it's worst..."[/sarcasm]

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

And your support for this statement? Where in the ACA is any socialized medicene? Hospitals will still be private/public, except for the VA, there is no government payor except for Medicare/Medicaid/VA, unless you support killing them off and leaving the elderly and our veternas without health care?

That was not a response, that was a comment. Your question was directed at Otis. It was not an attack. It was a complement and a question.

If you can't keep up, take notes. (that is an attack)
