The suspect in custody is the couple’s 15-year-old son, Nehemiah Griego, who authorities believe shot and killed his mother, young brother and two young sisters about 1 a.m. Saturday, and then lay in wait for five hours before ambushing his father when he came home.
The Journal also has learned that authorities believe Nehemiah then put several loaded weapons, including the assault rifle, in the family van with the plan to drive to the nearest Walmart, gun down more people and eventually die in a shootout with police.
But Nehemiah called a friend first, who talked him into meeting at Calvary church, where Nehemiah’s father had been a pastor. It was apparently a Calvary church security officer who contacted 911 about the slayings at the Griego home late Saturday.

But it's a mistaken assumption that only unwanted children are abused, or that all unwanted children are abused. I'd bet $1000 that increasing abortion rates would not decrease abuse rates, because the more positive correlation is that parents who have been abused are more likely to abuse their children in turn and very often those are people who want kids, but don't know better how to be good parents - they learned from example, and they have a lot of unresolved anger/grief/frustration/etc that they take out on their kids because they now have the power that they didn't have before and need to feel in control.Raees wrote: That's not true of children who are abused from the day they are born. The abuse is constant. Unfortunately, in many cases the abuse stops when they die.
Yes, child abuse is ugly. Bringing unwanted children into the world just keeps the cycle going.

It was good thinking on the friend's part to talk him into meeting somewhere else not filled with people. Why all the time in between is very puzzling. This case is a good example of why there needs to be increased awareness for, and availability of, mental health services. Maybe there was abuse, maybe not, but I'd bet there were warning signs that this kid needed help and someone noticed.
