A “large number” of Americans had their telephone calls accidentally intercepted by the NSA when a top-secret order to eavesdrop on multiple phone lines for reasons of national security confused the international code for Egypt (20) with the area code for Washington (202).
WASHINGTON (AP) — New revelations from leaker Edward Snowden that the National Security Agency has overstepped its authority thousands of times since 2008 are stirring renewed calls on Capitol Hill for serious changes to NSA spy programs, undermining White House hopes that President Barack Obama had quieted the controversy with his assurances of oversight.
An internal audit provided by Snowden to The Washington Post shows the agency has repeatedly broken privacy rules or exceeded its legal authority every year since Congress granted it broad new powers in 2008.
In one of the documents, agency personnel are instructed to remove details and substitute more generic language in reports to the Justice Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence — reports used as the basis for informing Congress.
Obama has repeatedly said that Congress was thoroughly briefed on the programs revealed by Snowden in June, but some senior lawmakers said they had been unaware of the NSA audit until they read the news on Friday. The programs described earlier vacuum up vast amounts of metadata — such as telephone numbers called and called from, the time and duration of calls — from most Americans' phone records, and scoop up global Internet usage data.
Even Feinstein didn't know about NSA’s audit of privacy violations. It's good for the liberals that Obama is not Bush... cause he'd be impeached by now.

If you do the research (on going thru decades of Presidents) you will educate yourself on just
how Untruthful our government really is....of course, JMO

So-o-o, WHAT is the solution? We would REQUIRE a new paradigm to resolve the problem....
I don't see that kind of outrage nor initiative from the general populace......I am old enough to
remember Nixon/Watergate/the rising up of people to STOP the illegal crap that Nixon perpetrated.....THAT kind of outrage is lacking.....JMO
Watergate was nothing compared to what happens now. Today, Nixon could have gone on Leno, cracked a couple of jokes about it, and walked away from it. The government learned a lot of lessons from that time period. Keep us fat and happy with enough to get by. All volunteer armed forces. Use smart bombs or drones instead of sons or daughters. No feet on the ground unless our vital interests are at stake and there is no other option. Do all that and you can get away with anything else you want.
