Bob, they were frustrated with the current admins lack of concern, their morale was as good as could be expected. This was a couple years ago and they had just relocated to the northern border in the Montana area. Both trained hard and were impressive with their skills, partially because they know they are on their own.
Relating to Rick's comment, use our National Guard to assist in border security, we already pay for them and using them to replace active military diminishes our security at home. We hear reports from the FBI, Homeland Security, etc. that terrorist cells already exist here and individual jihadists are continually being recruited. Until we experience our next 9/11, it is easier to remain oblivious to the problem.
Let us not forget that one source of the problem is contained in the liberal interpretation of the 14th Amendment's wording with regards to being born here and subject to our jurisdiction. Congress should pass a bill, and place it on Obama's desk, which clarifies that citizens are only those born to citizens or legal residents of the Union. They, after all is said and done, are the only ones truly subject to the jurisdiction of the Union and only to the jurisdiction of the Union. All others are controlled, at least in part, by treaties with the countries in which they are citizens, which removes them from being subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.
Once we have no more "anchor babies", we have no more need to grant, by executive fiat, functional amnesty to their parents in order to avoid splitting up families. Remove the incentives and you remove the attraction. Follow that basic formula across the board with regards to illegal immigration and you have taken a large step towards solving the problems.
As for border security, given it is a federal responsibility, start by having the border secured by the federal army we maintain for defense of the Union. Border security is a function of defending the Union from foreign threats, including illegal immigration. If the federal government won't do it, then the States, since they are independent and sovereign, have the ability to secure it themselves. Call out the State Guard, reestablish a citizen militia for the task, but take the necessary steps to secure the border and create a conflict between State and federal that needs to be solved either by direct action on the part of the federal government or by lawsuits filed in the federal courts. If you don't like the verdict, then do as President Jackson did and say the courts have rendered their verdict, now let's see them enforce it.
It is high time we start holding the federal government accountable for their assigned tasks, assigned by the Constitution, and stopped letting it get away with pursuing the tasks it has assigned itself as its highest priority.
I have been saying facetiously for years that we should pull all of our troops out of the Middle East and annex Mexico. Now I'm not so sure that I'm facetious...

.
Thanks for reminding me of that one, I totally agree. How many other countries grant you citizenship merely because you were born on that soil? I don't see the logic anymore.

Rick wrote: President Obama has allowed every illegal immigrant who has been here for at least 5 years to stay, to work, and get a Social Security number. Other than assuming these illegal applicants will all tell the truth, how will we know which of the 1-12 million illegals (plus all that are making the trip as we speak), actually qualify for this presidential gift?.
After you answer my question, you may pick apart my answer to your question, then I will do the same to yours if I disagree. Fair?
First of all, I'm not going to "pick apart" your answer to my question. I thought it was well thought out and reasonable. If the costs associated with your proposals are met with general and widespread approval, then I see no reason NOT to implement them. I'm just not so sure they will be, especially from the politicians who have this responsibility.
Edited to add: I'm all for existing technology and resources to be used in applicable situations. Re-inventing the wheel, so to speak, has been proven over and over again to be inefficient and impractical. So, your ideas regarding using layered long range motion sensor towers and active military/National Guard personnel is sound as far as I'm concerned.
As to your question for me, as I stated earlier, abuses will be present. Of that, there can be no doubt. There are, have been, always will be in virtually any laws this country passes. I just don't believe the abuses will necessarily be as "rampant" as you, perhaps, believe they will be. The question you ask is obvious. We won't "know" in all cases. That's why the background check and accountability portions of the executive actions are part of those actions. If you're looking for a fool-proof, 100% guarantee that all illegals falling under the umbrella of this executive action will be caught, that won't happen. Nothing is that fool-proof. I believe these executive actions are a start - nothing more. I also believe Congress now needs to take a serious look at them, modify them, pass viable legislation on immigration reform, and put it before the President to sign or veto. As Reverend Revelant stated, the ball would then be in Obama's court as to whether or not this sitting President is, in fact, an obstructionist or not.
Rick, the only question (at this time) I have about your question to me is with regard to your assertion Obama has allowed those living here for 5 years or more to stay, to work, and get a SS number. According to what I've seen, this part of the Executive Action breaks down into Administration "guidance", not regulation. If I'm missing something here, I'd appreciate some elaboration.
If someone is willing to risk their lives and everything else to illegally cross the border, there is zero incentive for them to volunteer the truth that would send them back. That's like asking a guy who is running out of a bank with a bag of money, if he just robbed it.
So this magical 4 million number may very well be 10 million for all we know.

I don't dispute that, Rick. What I'm asking is with regard to whether or not this part of the executive action is actually something that the President "expects" to be a part of his Executive Actions. Edited to add: in other words, to actually be a "regulation". According to what I've seen, it isn't. Rather, it's a "guideline" which, to me anyway, means he's throwing it out there in the hope Congress takes it from there and amends/acts on it in some fashion.
Well he and his administration are not calling this a just guideline to follow and I don't think that is the impression the illegal immigrants got. If this was just a guideline or a reccomendation to Congress, it means absolutely nothing and there was no good reason to address the nation in a prime time address.
