Civil Rights? How about the right to choose whether or not you want a Male roommate or a Female one? Seems to me that this is carrying things just a little too far.

Michigan Woman Faces Civil Rights Complaint for Seeking a Christian Roommate

A civil rights complaint has been filed against a woman in Grand Rapids, Mich., who posted an advertisement at her church last July seeking a Christian roommate.

The ad "expresses an illegal preference for a Christian roommate, thus excluding people of other faiths,” according to the complaint filed by the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan.

"It's a violation to make, print or publish a discriminatory statement," Executive Director Nancy Haynes told Fox News. "There are no exemptions to that."

I doubt that there is any cause for the complaint......the laws views seeking a roommate different than having a rental unit that is not part of your home. If you advertise for a renter (not in your personal home) then you cannot descriminate.

Not according to this article there. Maybe there in Arizona, but according to the article it is a violation.

Can I discriminate as to sex with a prospective room mate? How about sexual preference?

I stand corrected....I found many instances where people have been sued because they chose not to share their house with someone they felt uncomfortable with. I would give anyone who is looking for a roommate the same advice I gave my daughter when she wanted to rent her home......get their financials first.......one can usually find within those a legitimate reason to deny their application to rent, and financial reasons most always hold up in court.

Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act), as amended, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents or legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and handicap (disability).

That has been the law for 42 years. What part of illegal do you not understand?

What part of I corrected myself didn't you understand? However, finances are not part of the protection, you can require a prospective renter to be financially sound, and the determination of that is largely up to the landlord.

So if I have millions of US dollars, you will rent to me? True?
