House GOP stalls bill on lunches for needy kids
Republicans say nutrition bill is too costly, example of government overreach

WASHINGTON — House Republicans have temporarily blocked legislation to feed school meals to thousands more hungry children.

Republicans used a procedural maneuver Wednesday to try to amend the $4.5 billion bill, which would give more needy children the opportunity to eat free lunches at school and make those lunches healthier. First lady Michelle Obama has lobbied for the bill as part of her "Let's Move" campaign to combat childhood obesity.

Yeah, it's their own darn fault for being poor. Let 'em starve. We can spend $700 Billion and give millionaires some tax breaks, but hungry kids...Nah, we have to "trim the fat in the budget."

Procedural. Find the money by cutting elsewhere and it will happen.

BTW, have you ever seen the trashcans at a public school cafeteria? Probably the biggest daily waste of food in the nation. It would probably be cheaper and the kids would have higher quality food if you gave them all $5 to spend at McDonalds or Taco Bell.

I agree. Time to make choices. We can't keep borrowing more and more from China to fund our excesses. If free school lunches are what Americans want, cut somewhere and fund those lunches. Balance the budget. There is no more money.

Too bad future generations aren't here to see all the great things we are spending their $$ on!!

As usual LJ lets go with a shotgun blast without following through. There is usually a page two that she doesn't bother to expand on.
The reason, LJ, is that (continue reading from LJ's source) http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/20 ... -addressed

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced this morning that Republicans will block any legislation from coming to the Senate floor until two key economic issues are addressed: funding the government (the “continuing resolution” which must pass to prevent a government shutdown) and the extension of the Bush-era tax cuts.

McConnell said that members of his caucus are united in the pledge to use procedural votes to prevent any other non-economic issues -- including the new START treaty, the DREAM Act, or the defense authorization bill that contains a potential repeal of the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy – from coming to the floor for debate.

"Republicans have pleaded with Democrats to put aside their wish-list - to focus on the things Americans want us to focus on," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "They've ignored us. The voters repudiated their agenda at the polls. They've ignored them."
In a letter signed by all 42 members of the GOP caucus, Republicans write that, "with little time left in this Congressional session, legislative scheduling should be focused on these critical priorities.”

Our Federal government should not be buying lunch for our school children.

Here's another function that the feds have stuck their noses into - instead of focusing their attention on the functions mandated to them by the constitution.

This is a matter that should be handled at the state and local level.

Somehow - I don't think this money will be cut from the budget- but it should be.

Agreed that ought to be a state and local issue.

Right... Let the little buggers go hungry. If their folks can't feed 'em, they shouldn't have bred them.

Got it.

In LJ's Free Government Paid happy meal, it would have an Obama bumper sticker with two gay men dolls holding hands.

Free lunch program is the most abused government program ever - not mention a leading cause to child obesity. Has been since I was in school. Today, almost 20 million students get a free meal.

I was always pissed off that kids in my neighborhood - have the same lifestyle - yet would get free lunches and I had to pay. Still does today.

It's a great training ground for young minds to grab hold of the socialist concept. Go to school, wait in line for food, and don't worry it's paid for you by a "rich" person.

Welcome to Public School 2010 - Make them Gay, Fat, and Socialist.

What a concept! Parents actually being responsible for their kids? Buying milk and eggs instead of lottery tickets, smokes, and WWE Pay-per-view events.

But Obama will save the day, the left wants to expand the school lunches to include breakfasts and dinners for the needy. Heck, lets just put the kids up in dormitories too so that we can be sure they have a warm, clean, place to sleep, and get milk and cookies before bedtime.
