50 reasons we're glad we live in Denver and not the United States
By Michael Roberts, Thu., Dec. 16 2010

The morning after election day, the author R.L. Stine tweeted, "I'm so glad I live in New York City and not in the United States." It's a sentiment we appreciate except for one thing: We'd much rather live in Denver than either New York City or the United States.

During the daily hustle and bustle (especially this time of year), we sometimes forget to stop and think about how lucky we are to call the Mile High City home. So we asked Westword staffers to tell us what they love most about D-town. Our top fifty is below.

My faves:
48. Dive bars galore. (My hubby comes home with the best stories after hitting them!)

47. Even terrorists who live here would rather attack somewhere else...

36. We're consistently ranked among the country's smartest cities -- which you would have known if you lived here.

12. The buffalo still roam here -- and we're not talking about CU players.

4. Our oysters are manlier than anyone else's oysters.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

It's sometimes hard to tell the mountain folk from the zombies.

30. The main branch of the Denver Public Library is just as jaw-dropping -- a technically advanced facility that's great for genealogical study, western-history research and watching homeless guys check their Twitter account.

Bwahahahahahaha!!! So true! And their facebook accounts - seen it!

Zombies indeed - did you know that the Denver area has two zombie reporters? As in they report on zombies, and only occasionally dress like one.

Lots of reasons I have lived here my whole life but number one has got to be no humidity or bugs and you can go to the mountains when it is hot. We just have everything in one state.

I cannot handle humidity! My hair droops and I just feel miserable.

Have to agree with CG, low humidity, cool mountains in the summer, snow, but also thaw out periods in the middle of winter.
Oceans & the beach? Thought I would like them but I really don't. It is a privelige to live in Colorado

Everyone moves here and stays. Especially sports stars. Once you go Colorado you never go back.....
