Since its enlargement in May 2004, the EU has further extended its land borders with non-Member States, in eastern and southern Europe in particular. These borders need to be properly policed to protect all Member States from illegal immigration, people smuggling and other forms of cross-border crime
Then there is Saudi Arabia who two years ago sought to fortify its northern border with war-torn Iraq by installing a razor-wire fence and an integrated electronic surveillance system. This summer, the nation decided to expand the effort to all its borders.
Of course there is the well known Iran boarder incident where a few hikers allegedly crossed the boarder into Iran and ended up in Jail.
No country that I know has borders that it does not try to protect and they are serious about it.
If you cross the N. Korean border illegally, you will get 12 years hard labor
If you cross the Iranian border illegally, you are detained indefinitely
If you cross the Afghan border illegally, you get shot
If you cross the Saudi Arabian border illegally, you will be jailed.
If you cross the Chinese border illegally, you may never be heard from again. The police gives 100 RMB reward to whistleblowers.
If you cross the Venuzuelan border illegally, you will be branded a spy and your fate will be sealed.
If you cross the Cuban border illegally, you will be thrown into political prison to rot.
If you cross the EU border illegally, you are detained for up to 18 months before deportation.
Everywhere you go, countries wrestle with illegal immigration in different ways, but few have open borders.

AURORA, Colo. -- Several community groups are trying to stop the deportation of a small business owner and mother of three who they admit has been living in the United States illegally for 14 years.
Jeanette Vizguerra, who is from Mexico City, was scheduled for a final hearing before an immigration judge on Monday.
Community groups call Vizguerra an outstanding community leader.
Vizguerra owns a moving and cleaning company and has employed dozens of people throughout the years, according to her immigration rights advocacy group, Rights for All People.
