Since its enlargement in May 2004, the EU has further extended its land borders with non-Member States, in eastern and southern Europe in particular. These borders need to be properly policed to protect all Member States from illegal immigration, people smuggling and other forms of cross-border crime

Then there is Saudi Arabia who two years ago sought to fortify its northern border with war-torn Iraq by installing a razor-wire fence and an integrated electronic surveillance system. This summer, the nation decided to expand the effort to all its borders.

Of course there is the well known Iran boarder incident where a few hikers allegedly crossed the boarder into Iran and ended up in Jail.

No country that I know has borders that it does not try to protect and they are serious about it.

If you cross the N. Korean border illegally, you will get 12 years hard labor
If you cross the Iranian border illegally, you are detained indefinitely
If you cross the Afghan border illegally, you get shot
If you cross the Saudi Arabian border illegally, you will be jailed.
If you cross the Chinese border illegally, you may never be heard from again. The police gives 100 RMB reward to whistleblowers.
If you cross the Venuzuelan border illegally, you will be branded a spy and your fate will be sealed.
If you cross the Cuban border illegally, you will be thrown into political prison to rot.
If you cross the EU border illegally, you are detained for up to 18 months before deportation.

Everywhere you go, countries wrestle with illegal immigration in different ways, but few have open borders.

Hey Einstein, look at that list of countries- Do we wanna be like any of them? I'm suprised Somalia is not on there.

Obama's Hypocritical Rhetoric on Immigration Reform
Michael Barone | Columnist's Archive

Barack Obama's immigration speech in El Paso May 10 was an exercise in electioneering and hypocrisy. Hypocrisy because while Obama complained about "politicians" blocking comprehensive immigration bills, he was one of them himself.

In 2007, when such a bill was backed by a lame duck Republican president and had bipartisan backing from Senate heavyweights Edward Kennedy and Jon Kyl, Sen. Obama voted for union-backed amendments that Kennedy and Kyl opposed as bill-killers.

In 2009 and 2010, President Obama acquiesced in Speaker Nancy Pelosi's decision to pass cap-and-trade and bypass immigration and in Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's decision not to bring an immigration bill to the floor.

Both times the votes were probably there to pass a bill. Obama did not lift a finger to help.

AURORA, Colo. -- Several community groups are trying to stop the deportation of a small business owner and mother of three who they admit has been living in the United States illegally for 14 years.
Jeanette Vizguerra, who is from Mexico City, was scheduled for a final hearing before an immigration judge on Monday.
Community groups call Vizguerra an outstanding community leader.
Vizguerra owns a moving and cleaning company and has employed dozens of people throughout the years, according to her immigration rights advocacy group, Rights for All People.

14 years and hasn't tried to or even wanted to follow the law regarding citizenship.
Wonder how many "employees" were legal.

Bet she created more jobs and tax revenue than most of the posters on this board have, yet most of the posters here would support here deportation. Stupid....

That's awesome!
Question is if I come to your house and steal your stuff, can I get away with breaking the law for 14 years, or will you call the cops right away?
I glad after 14 years, of BREAKING THE LAW she has decided to do the RIGHT thing.
They're must be some kind of punishment, of what am not sure deportion, seems a bit harsh since she has decided to no longer be a criminal...
What is the stature of limitions on being in the country illegally? I don't know.

EDITED This is about the best answer I ciould come up with...See if you can do better.

What is the statute of limitations for illegally crossing the border from Mexico to America?
Also, is it a misdemeanor or felony to be caught having overstayed your visa or having no papers at all?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker
No statute in place for this being there is no record of when someone crossed, like murder, there is no statute of limitations for this. Its not a felony right now but both Republicans and Democrats plan to make it one, your sentence for overstay will be deportation.
