They are a great resource, but like everything else they have their advantages and disadvantages.

Listen for a while, ask questions, and you will be better prepared to make a decision about whether, and what to buy.

I will be happy to offer whatever help I can.

Thanks for the input. Any brands you would recommend?

I just have a cheap radio shack scanner. It has been providing scanner info for about 8 years now.

Brands, models, etc. depend on exactly what you want to do with it.

Scanner only, or ability to transmit also (properly licensed)?

VHF, UHF, 700/800 Mhz, digital, analog, trunking, narrowband, wideband, APCO 95?

Don't mean to get technical here, but there are multiple things to consider.

Most of the Fire departments in the Conifer/Bailey area are currently on analog VHF. Older scanners work great. If you want to have Evergreen, you need UHF capability. If you want to have Intercanyon, 800Mhz digital.

And, it is changing fairly rapidly.

So, you need to consider what you want, what you can afford, what you really need, etc.

(I knew I could get a  in here somewhere! )

Forgot to add, desk model that will always stay at home, or one you can take with you in the vehicle, on the bike, hike, etc.

Anyone good at making maps? A (good) picture is worth a thousand words.

And as bandbvh has shown me, 'good' is in the eye of the beholder. Some of us like topos, some satellite views, some road maps. Many opportunities here for those who are so inclined, to take info posted from scanners and make it more understandable.
