We were talking about the Lucas family with the family we are hosting during the Lower North Fork Fire. They knew them and knew all the things they had done in the way of fire suppression to prepare their home for fire, i.e. cement shingles, foam, water containment, generator, etc. Very good discussion. As the pastor and our host family said, when the fire is crowning and too big, even the best homes will succumb, especially those on a ridge/hill as many of the homes were, taking advantage of the beautiful vistas.

The main thrust of their discussion is that wildfire mitigation is still a must do. When they rebuild they plan another active(minimal)/passive solar home and plan to reseed around their home for 30 feet or more and more in the front on the slope. The point being that if there should be another wildfire, they want to be one of the homes left standing if the fire isn't as intense. I am absolutely amazed with this family.

Update on the family:
They have already found a rental near their children's schools and anticipate about 2 years to rebuild. They went down the mountain to get a few furnishings that they will use in the rental and then move into their rebuild. While most of the home is in ashes, there is some minor clean up to do with the home itself and the focus for the time being when they get back in will be cleaning up the area and removing the charred trees before starting the rebuild. They wanted to find housing before the children went back to school. We hope to continue to be a support while they transition to their new place and help with the clean up/rebuild. We have already volunteered our mom to keep them and helpers supplied with some good cooking. We knew she would do it anyway even if we didn't volunteer her.

In spite of all the movement forward we know there are and will be some hard times for all impacted. You remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Thanks to the firefighters who have worked so hard to make this happen.

But not the time to sit back and think everything is ok. We have some interesting weather today and tomorrow so we need to be aware and ready to leave, without waiting for reverse 911 if it doesn't look and feel right. That means Bailey and the surrounding areas too as they aren't that far from the smoke and since it can have its own weather pattern it could turn. Stay alert.

Food Safety after Power Outage:
News Release from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment:

Barbara Hruska, director of the Department of Public Health and Environment’s Consumer Protection Division, said, “The loss of electricity may cause perishable and frozen foods to become spoiled and cause illness if eaten, even if the food is thoroughly cooked. Do not trust your eyes or sense of smell. Food may be unsafe to eat, even if it doesn’t look or smell bad.”

Hruska provided these food safety tips to follow whenever the power goes out:

Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature.

The refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours if it is unopened.

A full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed.

If the food stored in the refrigerator has been held above 41 F for more than four hours, throw it away.

If food stored in the freezer has thawed but is still below 41 F, it can be refrozen. Although the quality of the food may be compromised, it still should be safe to eat.
