So perhaps we can all agree that the parents are the best ones to make this decision and not a bunch of uninformed, judgemental folks on the internet? That statements calling a parent "unloving" for making a thoughtful decision different than your own is over the top, uncalled for and unhelpful?

They're gettin all defensive because they were duped into drugging thier energetic curious kids and now they gotta cling to the absurd idea that they did the right thing- when they know deep down that they did'nt. It's like republicans, specifically Bush Voters..In denile

Read closer, VL. I'm medicating my energetic curious self, not my kids.

rldbaily, sorry for the accusatory tone, but the 'zombie' reference provoked an emotional response. I can and will now reply better - I agree that meds are not needed in all cases. Since ADD and ADHD are treated with stimulants, I fail to see how any of them could possibly cause a state of mind that could in any way be compared to a zombie.

Why would you want to give a stimulant to an already hyper person, whether they be a child or and adult?

If you don't know the answer to this, then you aren't informed enough about anti-ADHD drugs to judge the relative merits of medicating vs not medicating.

It was more of a rhetorical question and I'm sorry you didn't get that from my post and, yes, I do know the answer. To know me is to know that I just don't make things up in my head as I go along. My family has been dealing with this medical condition for many years and although I'm not an expert, I have enough common sense to read up on a condition that is in my gene pool.

I just Googled ADHD and WOW - they say that Environmental, diet, social, neurodiversity, etc.... are all factors, including genetics.

It also states that stimulants are the "medical treatment of choice". There are a number of non-stimulant medications that may be used as alternatives and that there are no good studies of comparative effectiviness between various medications, and there is a lack of evidence on their effects on academic performance and social behaviors. While stimulants and atomoxetine are generally safe, there are side effects and contraindications to their use. Medications are not recommended for preschool children, as their long-term effects in such young people are unknown. There is very little data on the long-term adverse effects or benefits of stimulants for ADHD.

I could go on and on, but we can clearly see that NOT everything is black and white and that sometimes we get a little gray in the mix. I have based my thoughts, opininions and ideas on mine and my families experiences, medical advice and research and nothing more.

How dare you not trust the doctors and the pharmacuticles companies that send them on all expense paid trips to exotic locations in exchange for them perscribing thier drugs..

How dare you use your own life experience when forming your opinions

Again, those were the words my neice used to describe how she felt while on Ridalin, which is what I stated. Since I have never been on Ridalin or like meds for this condition, I can only go by what she told her family and doctor. She made the decision NOT to take meds and apparently, it worked out best for her in the long run, which again, is all that matters.

Nope, I didn't. No projects today that require extended focus, so I skipped it. The meds are great that way - quick response, long acting, and they don't have to build up over time to be effective. BTW, the people aren't drugging kids to 'get them' to sit still, they're medicating them to 'let them be able' to sit still. Big difference.

I can get the same effect from a bunch of Mountain Dew, but the pill doesn't have the calories.
