Is there anything anybody could say that would calm the markets? I doubt the Messiah Reagan could even say anything that could make people feel better about what's happening.

I'm going to buy heavilly over the next few days, wait until the market comes back up despite the government's incredible stupidity, and then sell.
Yup, everyone's selling in a panic. Market's down. Time for long term investors to make a killing.

Calm is just another name for stagnant.
Stagnant ponds eventually get putrid.
Obama isn't giving a speech to calm the markets, he's giving a speech to fire up the turbulence - because he knows that's the only way to keep things moving and alive. When the market dips, the smart money goes into riskier stocks because the potential returns skyrocket making is more worth the risk.

Just reminds me of the scene from Animal House at the end where Kevin Bacon is trying to calm the crowd to no effect.
And anyone catch the Hitchhiker reference?

I've got my babelfish, and when I listen to Obama speak, all I hear is "Feed my ego, I'll pay you if you do."

Yawn.
I'm sure the same people would be complaining if instead of speaking on the issue, he didn't speak on the issue.

Nope, I'd be happy if he'd just shut up, and ride out his term without doing any more damage.
